Helps for the Leader I. T he P arable of the H erring

“Are you still giving them the Bible?” inquired one servant o f Christ of another, as he sympathetically asked how the work of the Lord was prospering in his friend’s hands. “Yes,” was the prompt reply, “ I have nothing else to give.” Thereupon another friend chimed in, “Ah, that reminds me of the parable of the old mother herring saying to a young one, ‘R'emember, child, you are restricted to the ocean.’ ”— P ickering . II. A voiding G uesswork A little boy saw his father using a spirit level to see whether his work was “true” and straight. “What’s the use of being so careful, Father?” he asked.'’“It looks very good.” “Guessing won’t do in carpenter work,”, said his father, sighting along the edge of a board, and shaving it the least bit. “You have to be exactly right. Folks guess at too many things. God doesn’t like that way of living.” “ But there aren’t any spirit levels for living by,” laughed the boy, watching him. “Yes, there are,” said his father earn estly. “You’ll find them in the Bible. Try all your actions by that. Make them true and straight, and no guesswork about them.”— Five Thousand Best Illustrations, by Hallock. III. T he W ord of G od 1. Or, the members might read and comment upon Scripture verses which describe God’s Word and its power in human lives.
