PASTORAL CARE Julius House

Josh Mortensen are excited by the challenge. The year began with the decision on the Julius House motto. Despite being in existence for 110 years, Julius House has never had a motto. An exhaustive process of consultation and discussion took place over several months, involving a great deal of thought around the most important values for Julius House, and how to ensure they were incorporated into a motto which would stand the test of time. Thank you very much to the many people who participated in this lengthy process, and who gave their thoughts and opinions. The process finished with a vote at the Julius House prize-giving in November 2018, and a carving of the Julius House Crest was commissioned for the outside of Julius House with the twin mottos of: “In Unitate Florescemus” and “He Waka Eke Noa”

It is our belief that to be the best House we can be, we need to focus first on the overall wellbeing and positive development of the boys in the House. This is the most fundamental role of a House and a Housemaster – not a total focus on winning the House Cup! This is far more difficult to measure than whether or not we win the tennis competition (for example), but feedback from parents and boys this year with regard to their progress in the House and across College more generally has been overwhelmingly positive. For example, in the most recent parent survey Julius House received a satisfaction rating in the highest outstanding range. We were the top achieving House academically, we have the most prefects of any House for the second year in a row, we won many of the interhouse sports competitions – especially at junior level – and we were clearly the best in House Music and in the top three for the House Plays. Our boys tell us they feel safe, supported, encouraged and challenged, which is exactly what you would want. Thank you to Deputy Housemaster Nikki Bleyandaal, and Assistant Housemasters David Chambers, Peter Cooper, Susan Harding, Shelly Jackson and Olivia Austin. Unfortunately, we must say goodbye to Olivia, as she is leaving us to take on the Deputy Housemaster role in Condell’s House. This is a well-deserved promotion for Olivia, and I am sure she will be a great asset to Condell’s. Having said that winning the House Cup is less important than ensuring the overall wellbeing of the boys, I am also very happy to report that Julius House came 2nd

Olivia Austin, David Chambers, Peter Cooper, Susan Harding, Shelly Jackson Head of House: Fergus Beadel Deputy Heads of House: Matthew Todd, Jack Lindo Another outstanding year has come and gone in Julius House, and once again I am very proud of what we have been able to achieve. Julius House has a long and proud history of inclusiveness, participation and excellence, and this year really has been no exception. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fergus Beadel, Matthew Todd and Jack Lindo for their outstanding leadership over the course of the year, well supported by Head Prefect Zach Gallagher and the rest of the Year 13 cohort. As the year has gone on this great group of young men has grown in confidence in their ability to lead the House, to look after the younger students, and to seek out and take on additional responsibilities to make the House an even better place for our young men. They really have left a legacy upon which the new leaders for 2020 can build, and new Head of House Kynan Salt and Deputy Head of House

The crest will be attached to the wall outside the Housemaster’s office over the summer break. Together the mottos reflect the core belief of those in the Julius community who participated in the process: “If we all work together, we will achieve excellence”. Julius House is clearly living the motto ...
