Uddaka Wijesinghe Junior Trophy For all-round excellence Thimeth Wijesinghe

equal in the House competition this year. We were neck and neck with winners Somes House right up to the disastrous tug of war debacle in the last week of the year. Well done, however, to the boys in the House for their outstanding efforts throughout the year, as we won junior volleyball, tennis, futsal and squash, and senior cricket and table tennis. The House Play was a wonderful effort from Fergus and the boys, and Matthew Todd was absolutely outstanding in preparing the boys for a wonderful performance in House Music. Yes, we were robbed! The desire to increase the amount of community service from our boys with our charity partner Hohepa Homes led to the addition of a second day of service to the calendar this year. The first day was a huge call to arms, and it was wonderful to see about 80 boys and assorted family members turn up for a day of weeding, cutting, chainsawing and ripping out trees in Autumn. The final result was an enormous amount of work completed for Hohepa, a deepening understanding among the boys of the need to give back to the community, and a great way to celebrate the wider Julius community. Unfortunately, the second day was rained out as a storm hit Christchurch and we were unable to help. However, we are looking forward to another big effort next year. Parent functions were again a key part of the Julius experience for the families of our boys. Thank you very much to Murray and Tonia Salt, and Julie and Gordon Beadel, for opening their homes and hosting some excellent evenings. Thank you, too, to Bridget Goodman and Julie Beadel for their help with the highly successful Julius House Quiz Night, an event which has become one of the highlights of the year. Although they didn’t win this year, the quiz once again became an opportunity for the Sudell brothers to showcase their general knowledge – and I hear there is a third Sudell joining us next year. The Julius House prize-giving ceremony was held on the hottest

day of the year in November. Fergus Beadel gave an outstanding and inspiring speech, and the Year 13 students gifted Dr Field with a precious taonga, which they had dipped in the Waimakariri River as a way of blessing. Fergus ended his speech by paraphrasing John F Kennedy, challenging the boys to look at the ways in which they can contribute to the House and make it better, rather than sit back and wait for the House to do something for them. Dr Field asked the Julius community for feedback on what they wanted from “their” House, and to think of ways in which House points could be awarded on a more equitable basis. Another outstanding event with a wonderful group of boys and their parents. Thank you, once again, to everyone in the Julius community. We already have a great House, and with Kynan, Josh, and prefects Thomas McClean and Henry Eglinton, together with the talented Year 13 students, 2020 will be another year in which we grow and build upon what has already been achieved.
