Several batsmen made good starts, but it would have been nice to see someone anchor the innings and make a big score. Harper batted nicely in a 90 run partnership with Manson. Greenslade looked good but the other seamers went at more than a run a ball. Despite taking regular wickets we could not get the last man and Willows scored the winning run with three balls left.

Greenslade took over as captain, but the patterns from Term 1 continued. With our top order commonly only making starts it meant pressure mounted, but we were fortunate to have a resilient middle and lower order in the batting stakes. Wins over St Thomas of Canterbury College (where Lachie Harper took 6 for 14) and St Bede’s got us to the Gillette Cup regional final, which we lost to a very strong St Andrew’s College team. We also had a tie (against Christchurch Boys’ High School 2nd XI) and a one run loss to North West Youth Cricket. The season ended strongly with wins over StAC 2nd XI (by 101 runs) and North West (by 199 runs). Nicholas scored the team’s first century against StAC and in both these matches put on a hundred run opening partnership with Toby Beale. He also brought up 2000 runs for the team in the final match, a feat seen only six times since the turn of the millennium. Term 1 featured two day games, and in Term 4 all matches were one day. With Nicholas Lidstone as captain, the season started with the annual Willows fixture and then College hosted the Trans-Tasman Festival. The festival allowed the players to grow into their roles. College fully committed to a positive brand of cricket and every match went down to the wire, but unfortunately the team found itself on the wrong side of the results. The best performance in Term 1 was the win over Otago Boys’ High School in the annual exchange. Other highlights were a nail-biting one wicket win over St Bede’s College and the start of the inaugural Twenty20 competition. There were fewer outstanding individual performances in Term 1 (Nicholas hit the side’s top score with 78 against King’s College in the Trans- Tasman Festival) but many smaller contributions from the whole team. The lack of big scores, however, meant it was difficult to force a win in the two day matches. Solid preparation saw the team primed and ready for the one day competition in Term 4.
