John Wells came 3rd in both the U15 200m and 400m at the South Island secondary schools’ athletics championships. Sean Jang was placed in the top 100 for Year 9 students in the Otago Junior Mathematics competition, and gained high distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition (top 3% of students in New Zealand). His team also won the Year 9 Cantamath team competition with a perfect score. SERVICE Head of Service Tommy Whitaker set up a new House service work initiative, organising students to help at the Avonside Early Childhood Centre. It was sometimes a challenge to coordinate groups, but the Year 10 students stepped up during service week. It proved a rewarding experience, and the children greatly enjoyed the company of our students. We will look to expand our work there in 2020.

The 2020 Head of House will be Fletcher Anderson. Fletcher is hugely deserving of this role and well-respected in Condell’s House. Tom Tothill and Matt Durant will be his deputies. These three are excellent role models for our House virtues, leading by example in the classroom, on the sports field and in the common room. Condell’s had a busy year in 2019, reaching the finals of many events and winning others. It will be a tough year to follow in terms of both individual and interhouse success. Our focus is not only to achieve well, but also to create an environment of respect, consideration and support for all within the House, with Condell’s students’ achievements a natural reflection of this positive environment. The Condell’s House experience means forming strong and meaningful friendships and, in turn, developing compassion and empathy for others. Best wishes to the Condell’s House community for the coming year. Alex Robertson Housemaster, Condell’s House

Rocco Barker, Finlay Broomhall, Ed Cochran, Bruce Chen, Santino Felitti-Duter, Tom Harrison, George Lee, Archer Oliver, Harry Sharr, Spencer Smith, Alex Speight, and Flynn Topham – were successful, but unfortunately lost to Julius House in the final. Basketball In an exciting game, the senior basketball team narrowly lost to Flower’s House (34–36) in the final. Fletcher Miller, Will Bennetts and Timothy Ding played significant roles in holding back the opposition. Our junior basketball team were also runners-up in their final. Debating Condell’s won the House Debating this year. Fletcher Anderson, Jamie Yee, John-Paul Lay and Tom Tothill were a well-informed, enthusiastic and good-humoured team, with the ability to engage and impress their audience. It has been great to see some of our junior students also keen to give debating a go. Well done to Josh Jolly, Matthew Brett, Harry Sharr, Levi Astle, Michael Taylor and Bruce Chen, who made it to the semi-final, but then lost to Somes. Futsal The annual sports festival was cancelled this year due to bad weather, however, the House enjoyed the futsal competition which replaced it. The senior team – Alexi Georgiou, Josh Jolly, Dominic Lambert, John-Paul Lay, Daniel Metherell, Max Surveyor, Tom Tothill, John Wells and Sam Whitaker – put in a determined effort against Somes in the final, but lost 1–3. The junior team fought their way back from being 0–2 down and played a fantastic semi-final, which they won 6–3 (Nate Ovendale 4, Spencer Smith 1, Archer Oliver 1). They then took on Julius House in the final, in a very close game. Nate scored in the last minute, which led to a penalty shoot-out. Harry Sharr
