Whether you have an acute injury, a chronic condition, or balance problems, seeing a physical therapist at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers can help you return to a more active and pain-free life. Give us a call today at: Bradenton-Central Clinic: (941) 749-1734 Ellenton Clinic: (941) 721-1854 damaged and/or weakened vestibular system to orient the patient to their environment. The problem is, if you sit too much or stop moving your head, you will become overly adapted to that sensory system and start to feel dizziness when you challenge it. For instance, when you become surface dependent, the more you sit or lie down, the better you feel. But when you get up, you disrupt that surface dependency and start to feel dizziness. Some people become surface dependent, others become visually dependent. Some become both with one greater than the other. We call these specific patterns “Sensory Mismatches”. This is where FYZICAL comes in. We have figured out the secret to treating dizziness. What can we do for you? We have the ability to identify your Sensory Mismatch, and we have the ability to effectively treat your specific condition with our FYZICAL Paradigm. Our Doctors of Physical Therapy will also professionally guide you through this sometimes scary period of life. Dizziness, imbalance, weakness and fear of falling can really impact your life and emotions. If you have fallen or present unsteady, than make sure you take an action step and come to see us for a free fall assessment and education about how we can help you. If a loved one, or a friend has any of these issues, than forward them a copy of this newsletter. A digital copy of our newsletters can be found on our Facebook page.

WE ARE RANKED #33 ON THE ENTREPRENEUR FRANCHISE 500 FOR 2020

At FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers, fall prevention is the cornerstone of our

mission. “Balance” is part of our name after all! The week of September 21st is the start of fall season, but it also kicks-off National Falls Prevention Awareness Week. We strive to bring focus to this very important topic through our annual “Fight the Fall” campaign. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Americans, across the US get injured due to falls at home and in their communities. By raising awareness, offering free fall risk assessments and providing access to effective treatments in over 400 FYZICAL locations, we are, with your help, reversing the curve and saving lives. Falls are preventable, but keep in mind that early intervention is key. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging, and there are steps to take to improve balance and decrease chances of falling. What makes us different: At FYZICAL Therapy &Balance Centers, our therapists realize how important balance and walking is for independent living, as well as for work activities, exercise, sports and enjoying life in general. We have developed a world-class balance rehabilitation program that can be tailored to each person’s individual needs. Unlike physical therapy for balance that uses random practice theory providing exercises in the hopes that something helps, FYZICAL uses a conceptualized framework of exercises called the FYZICAL Paradigm. The FYZICAL Paradigm was developed using NASA-based force plates and is designed to identify a patient’s Sensory Mismatch. What is Sensory Mismatch? You see, when you are dizzy, your brain will overcompensate using either your vision, surface contact, or both, to offset the

Patient Success Spotlight

THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 & ISOLATION ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY & RISK FOR FALLS CUSTOM STRENGTH & BALANCE TRAINING

I was immediately able to do the same balance exercises confidently with nearly normal balance! “I was referred because of balance issues and severe weakness in my legs. Balance exercises were difficult initially. Even with a safety harness on I wobbled and stumbled. My therapist identified my vestibular issues and treated one of these issues using an Epley maneuver. I was immediately able to do the same balance exercises confidently with nearly normal balance. I’m so delighted with my therapists and my progress!!! We have also been working on strength and flexibility. Although the progress is not as dramatic as the balance breakthrough, I am making good progress.” - A.S. 2 6 5 8 1 7

For instance, in Australia in June, approximately 2 months after their “first wave” had passed, the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA), reported that falls due to COVID-19 physical inactivity and isolation were up 30%. The APA note, “...While well meaning, infection control measures taken by aged care providers have had the perverse effect of accelerating physical, mental and emotional decline in many cases...The lack of activity and exercise will have significantly impacted...their mobility, strength, and balance and their cognitive and mental health”.
