HERITAGE WALKS & TOURS TOUR GUIDING - WE NEED YOU! This course is designed to prepare those planning to work as professional guides in the tourism industry. The course is run by experienced, professional tour guides and covers the fundamental skills and requirements of tour guiding through lectures and a practical session. The practical session will be a chance to put your new skills to work and the date/day will be decided upon in class. Hear about the many murders which took place along this journey including those of George Duncan, John Neill, Constable John Holman and Elva Stewart. HERITAGE TOUR: MATTHEW FLINDERS AND SA SA was the 'unknown coast' until Flinders charted its coasts naming over 100 places from Fowlers Bay to Encounter Bay. Hear the story of his tragic but heroic life, whilst we visit his memorials. We take the train to Flinders station (at your own cost or free with Seniors Card) to see the statue of Flinders and his cat. We visit or glimpse places linked to Flinders- Rapid Bay, Backstairs Passage & Cape Jervis and KI. Lunch break in Victor. At Encounter Bay walk to the memorial at Rosetta Head. INTERCONTINENTAL RAILWAY- ADELAIDE TO TAILEM BEND  NEW The railway bill of 1878 was the biggest SA capital expenditure with many engineering obstacles. It included the first iron bridge across the River Murray. The hills line had 8 tunnels, several bridges, 2 wooden viaducts. We experience some of these on the train to Blackwood (cost not included.) Fine stone stations were built in 1883 at Mitcham, Blackwood, Mt Lofty, Aldgate and Nairne. The fiasco of the train opening started at Blackwood and finished at Nairne. Optional visit to Roundhouse Museum in Murray Bridge and time in the railway town of Tailem Bend. History notes included. Depart WEA 8:30 am. Some settlers like Colin Thiele left their mark on Australian literature. August Schiller left his mark on Neales Flat and Sutherlands as blacksmith and farmer. Farmers formed Eudunda Farmers’ cooperative stores which left their mark across SA. The German settlers of Friedrichswalde had their town name changed to Tarnma in 1917. Today these settlements are in decline except for Eudunda. Towns within Goyder’s Line have fared better. We visit a monument to the Goyder’s line near Sutherlands. A pleasant day of rolling plains from Peep Hill to Australia Plains and the uplands from Julia to Tarnma. We stop at the new Kapunda silo art by renowned artist Sam Bates. Notes provided. ORIGINS OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE & PEOPLE The first two lessons will cover the origins of the Italian people. This will conclude with a discussion of the various cultures that prevailed at the time of the unification of the Italian state in the 1800s from the various dukedoms and kingdoms. The final lesson will cover how the Italian language evolved from the various Italian dialects (which were derived from Latin and Greek). Select dialects that are still in existence to this day will be discussed including the particular dialect that was chosen as Standard Italian.
