ARCHAEOLOGY/HISTORY & CULTURE THE TWO KOREAS:HISTORY, 1910 TO PRESENT The divergent political and economic paths of North and South Korea have been pivotal to the geo-politics of the Asia-Pacific region since 1945. This course provides a history of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to the present. The course also shows that the Korean peninsula has been crucial to Australia’s strategic and security interests since 1945, especially in relation to the evolution of the Australian- American relationship. THE EMUS AND THE HALLELUJAH HILLS A day off the beaten track visiting Allendale North,Marrabel, Apoinga (site of the first smelter for Burra copper mines 1849) and Apoinga Lagoon, Emuville historic site, and driving past Koonoona station homestead once one of the greatest SA sheep stations with 29,000 freehold acres. Lunch break in Burra. After lunch a visit to Worlds End and Burra Creek Gorge and then we sing our way across the Hallelujah Hills to Emu Downs and its old Lutheran church. There is a small surprise around every corner! Homeward stops in Robertstown (once known as Emuville too) and Kapunda. A day exploring the Burra copper routes, tiny German settlements and forgotten places. Extensive history notes included. PORTS OF THE PAST - GAWLER TO BROUGHTON A fascinating day following the coast line to past ports of SA from Port Gawler to Port Wakefield, Port Hughes, Wallaroo, Tickera and Port Broughton. All these ports shipped wheat and grain to the world in the 19th C. Most had early railways and tramways to their hinterlands such as Wakefield, Wallaroo and Broughton. Man handling of heavy bags of wheat from carts to stacks to ships was arduous and required many workers boosting the growth of these ports. Some are now forgotten, or a transport hub, or a tourist centre, but only Wallaroo remains an international port. Why? Lunch break in Wallaroo when at your cost you have time to visit the excellent Maritime Museum. Extensive notes provided. Depart WEA centre 8:30 am sharp.
