Wild boys go bald for breast cancer fundraiser SPORTS editionap.ca It’s a special finish for their hockey season this year for these young stars.
The Eastern Ontario Wild Minor Bantam hockey team is sporting a new look at the end of the 2013-2014 schedule. A clean, close, very smooth look. All 17 members of the squad shaved their heads to help raise awareness and money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. They succeeded beyond expectations with more than $15,000 collected in pledges. “Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is thrilled to have the support of the Eastern Ontario Wild Minor Bantam,” said Leigh Jasmine, the foundation’s Ontario region community development director. “We are so impressed by their teamwork and their passion for the cause.” All of theWild Minor Bantams are 13 years old, many of them from the Clarence-Rock- land area. One of the common themes that the Wild coaches try to instill in the players is that they are all part of one big family. At the start of the 2013-14 season, the Wild learned that one player’s mother had
been diagnosed with breast cancer and was undergoing treatment. That sparked the players to decide to do something to help out their “brother” and his family. During their regular competitive season they hosted a “Brother from Another Moth- er” fundraiser drive, each one pledging to shave his head if the team could reach a goal of $15,000. Links to the fundraiser were posted on the team’s website. Besides collecting pledges
online, players went out door-to-door to both collect donations and also publicize the fundraiser. The team also showcased the drive during their Associate Day event Nov. 2 in Cornwall. Parents of players also helped promote the cause through dona- tion boxes at their workplaces. In the end, the Wild collected $15,146, meeting and beating their goal. The last thing left to do was arrange for a visit to the barber on Dec. 21 for all the players and
