A search of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) website provides employment projection data across all occupations and sectors through 2029. The projection of growth for Chemical Engineers/Chemists and Materials Scientists is around 5% which is equal to the estimated 5% increase for all occupations and would add 5,700 jobs to the 99,400 estimated chemical engineer/chemists and material scientist jobs in 2019 ii . An Indeed.com search iii of ‘Chemist’ positions yields more than 7,397 jobs, with salaries ranging from $40,000 to $150,000 annually, and where full-time positions make up the overwhelming majority of jobs. This wide-ranging career choice is being sought after by a variety of companies including Quest Diagnostics, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Gilead Sciences, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. It is also worth mentioning there are at least 41 of these jobs are in the Seattle area. The need for chemists can be seen in the statistics shown below:

Additionally, the level of experience needed to secure a chemist position remains attainable. The vast majority of the open jobs are entry to mid level, while only a small percentage are open to only senior level employees. Since this is a growing field, it is likely that graduates of the Bachelor of Arts program would be able to easily transition into a position upon graduation.
