COMMUNITY IN ACTION

Skate skiing in trails

Skate skiing, a fast and exciting sport, can now be experienced by everyone at Summerstown Forest. The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) were able to purchase a number of skate skis and boots thanks to a generous grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). The Vancouver-based company, with stores across the country, has a large and diversified grant program supporting outdoor activities, conservation campaigns and preserving the environment. Skate skiing differs from classic skiing as it utilizes a skating motion; the skis are shorter, the poles are longer and the boot is more rigid, with a different type of binding. More speed can thus be attained. Of the 18 km of cross-country ski trails at Summerstown Forest, a loop of almost 8 km has been groomed for skate skiing for the past few years, and “skaters” have been seen zooming on the trails, easily outdistancing their classic counterparts. Pictured is certified ski instructor Tanya Deeks demonstrating the skate skiing technique.

It was quite the win and it was dedicated to an incredible man. The Ontario Hockey Academy Maroons of Cornwall gave a special gift to Brian Tardiff, on January 10. They won a tournament that in part recognizes Tardiff, a dedicated volunteer when it comes to girls’ hockey. The man has been battling Lou Gehrig’s disease for some years. Proceeds from the ALS Shootout Showcase will be donated to the ALS Society. The team invited Tardiff, who was in attendance in his wheelchair, to share in their Junior division championship photo. Pictured is the man, surrounded by the winning team. Winning in honor of Tardiff
