Hola Sober April

A Coffee with the FABULOUS Heather Lowe

What are your sober rituals daily? Pledge? Prayer? I start the day with coffee and a daily devotional reading + and journalling. I end the day with meditation. I practice yoga, a moving meditation at least 3 times a week. Have you found meditation, podcasts, or books helpful in recovery? I started meditation before I quit drinking and I swear it’s what planted the seed for my sobriety. I am a big believer in it. I use the InsightTimer app. I have read ALL the books and they have all been helpful. I am currently reading “When Things Fall Apart” by Pema Chodron. It is the wisest book I have ever read. I recommend it to everyone. The Home podcast was the first podcast I listened to and it carried me in the beginning. Recovery Happy Hour is my favorite, I am on episode 57. This is old school tho because both of these podcasts have ended. There are so many more resources available now, like Gill at Sober Powered. What was the last sober book you read? Mine! I have a book in progress, which I am very excited about and working diligently on. Do you have any sober heroes/heroines? Holly Whitaker is a pioneer and the first person I found on the internet that wrote about her experience with a relatable raw truth. Ann Dowsett Johnson’s book Drink is brilliant and I have had the pleasure of having her as a writing coach. Annie Grace’s perspective, practical insight, and no rules/no judgment look at alcohol have been transformative. Susan , YOU inspire me and your writing has me falling to my knees. Belle from Tired of Thinking About Drinking was my #1 resource when I was sober and curious. If there is someone reading this out there what would be your top sober tip for them? Cultivate self-compassion. Ask yourself, what do I need right now at this moment? Have your own back. It is hard to sit through the pain of a craving, but it is made easier when you decide to love yourself through it. I have never known anyone to hate themselves sober and believe me, I tried it for decades myself. Tell me about your business and what you hope to achieve for women in recovery? I provide a safe place and compassionate support for highly accomplished people to question and evaluate their relationship with alcohol. In addition, I work to smash the stigma of addiction and recovery in the workplace by creating and inspiring a new, healthier corporate culture in organizations.

What programs do you offer at DITCHED THE DRINK? I put all the tools I used in getting sober into my Ditched the Drink Jumpstart 6-week digital class. I offer 1x1 coaching and group coaching support. I also partner with the International Association of Professional Recovery Coaches to recruit more (much needed) Recovery Coaches. I create and facilitate corporate training on Addiction Awareness. I write and publish my work everywhere I can. What does the future hold for Heather? I want to help more people by expanding my group coaching offerings. I want to finish and publish my book. I am growing the corporate offerings as well. I am never short on ideas only time to complete… and as a sober babe, burnout and overwhelm are no longer options for me, so lots of self-care, slowing down, rest and relaxation too. What is your favourite quote? “Changed behavior is the best apology." This mantra holds me when regrets of my drinking past start to creep in. My drinking really can’t hurt me anymore, because it’s like robbing a house that I no longer live in. I am so grateful for my alcohol “problem”, because it has led me to live an awakened life.
