Falls among the elderly are prevalent, dangerous, and can diminish their ability to lead an active and independent life. Every year, about one in three seniors above the age of 65 years, and nearly one in two seniors over the age of 80 years have a fall, many times with disastrous consequences. The good news is that many of the falls are preventable. The bad news is that some people believe falls are a normal part of aging and are not preventable – this is not the case. Our physical therapists have advanced training and experience in working with patients who are at the risk for falls or have a history of falls. They can assess your need for an assistive device, provide suggestions for correcting home safety hazards, and design an individualized program of exercises and functional activities. The vestibular system includes parts of the inner ear and brain that help control balance and eye movements. Damage to the system due to disease, injury or aging can cause a vestibular disorder. As a result, it can lead to dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, difficulty steadying gaze and difficulty coordinating your eye movements.
