Meet your UJSSA JUNIOR BOARD KAYLEEN KULAS, KULAS SUFFOLKS, HOUSTON, MINNESOTA Junior, South Dakota State University, Major: Animal Science HOW AND WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED AS A MEMBER OF THE UJSSA? I first got involved with Suffolks as a child, when my great- grandmother introduced them to my Dad. Growing up around them sparked my early interest and involvement. I became involved with the UJSSA about 12 years ago, which allowed me to take a more active role in the Suffolk community and further develop my passion for the breed. WHICH UJSSA ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU ENJOYED PARTICIPATING IN THE MOST AND WHY? I have always enjoyed catching up with the sheep families at national shows, as it gives me the opportunity to reconnect with friends, share stories, and learn from others who are just as passionate about the breed. I also really enjoy attending the Suffolk Event, where I can connect with fellow members, exchange ideas, and continue building relationships and put my leadership skills in action as a Junior Board member. WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF UJSSA? It’s the opportunities we are given as youth to grow, learn, and get involved in the industry. Being part of the organization allows us to develop leadership skills, and gain valuable experiences through shows and events. I also really enjoy the opportunity to serve on the board and help create new events and ideas to bring to the entire organization across the U.S., making a positive impact for members nationwide. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT JOINING THE UJSSA AND IN RAISING SUFFOLKS? My advice for young people thinking about joining the UJSSA and raising Suffolks is to go for it! There are so many incredible opportunities available for youth, from leadership development to networking and hands-on learning experiences. We are very fortunate to have strong support from the foundation and senior board, who truly want to see young members succeed and be supported. The Suffolk breed is like one big family — everyone is welcoming and always willing to help, answer questions, and encourage you along the way.
