Les pompiers volontaires de Casselman en colère Les pompiers volontaires de Casselman avaient l’intention d’exprimer leur colère à la réunion du conseil du mardi 25 août (après la tombée de notre journal). Une source qui préférait conserver l’anonymat a affirmé au Reflet-News que l’adminis- tration souhaite faire signer un contrat de travail aux pompiers volontaires. « .Je ne connais aucune caserne de pom- piers volontaires dans Prescott-Russell qui fait signer ce genre de contrat, a-t-il dit. Le maire Conrad Lamadeleine s’est dit du même avis. « Je ne suis pas du tout d’accord avec ça, a-t-il insisté. C’est normal que ça inquiète les pompiers. Il y a trop de monde qui a raison. Il faut que l’administration s’assoit avec les membres du conseil et les pompiers, mais tant que le nouvel administrateur n’est pas embau- ché, il ne faut pas toucher à ce dossier. Francophone students return to school next week while English students have until after the Labour Day weekend before they are back in class. Meanwhile, two unions representing teachers have been busy at the bargaining table over the summer. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (EFTO) will up the ante starting Sept. 1 in its work-to-rule campaign against the provincial educationministry.The EFTO has been in a strike action situation for several months now but has limited its strategy so far to restricting its members to their ordinary classroomduties plus some extra-curricular volunteer activities. With the start of the new school year, the EFTO announced that it will continue nego- tiations with the province but will also now begin phase two of its work-to-rule campaign which will involvemore restrictions for ele- mentary teachers and occasional teachers on what their on-the-job duties will be. In Eastern Ontario, the EFTO action affects operations at Upper Canada District School Board schools. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) deals with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Associa- tion (OECTA) so that the EFTO action does New con targets Chinese seniors A new scam which has shown up in other parts of Canada may now be appearing in Eastern Ontario. It is called The Blessing Scam or The Chinese Evil Spirits Scam, and its target are senior Chinese women with strong traditional backgrounds. The scam has someone claiming to be a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine contacting the victim and telling them they can get help “cleansing the house” of evil spirits. The victim is told to bring cash or other valuables in a bag and receive a “blessing” in return. When the victim opens the bag later, it proves empty. Police believe an organized gang or group is behind the scam. Anyone approached with this con scheme or who has information about it is asked to call the Ottawa Police Organized Fraud Section at 613-236-1222, extension 5433, their local OPP detachment, or the CrimeStop- pers toll-free confidential tips line at 1-800- 222-8477. – Gregg Chamberlain
