Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3' Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of-his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the first-begotten into the world, he salth, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7 And of the angels he saith; Who mak- eth his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Romans 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. - 5 For Moses describeth the righteous ness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by ( them. 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, arid in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shaft confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth un to righteousness; and with the mouth con fession is made unto salvation. GOLDEN T E X T : “ God . . . hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son” (Heb. 1:1, 2). DEVOTIONAL READING: Rom. 5:1-11, Outline and Exposition I. T h e R e v e l a t io n T h r o u g h C h r is t (Heb. 1:1-3) I N THIS PASSAGE there are. cer tain contrasts between the révé lation “in time past” and the new revelation “ by his Son.” These contrasts are based upon their unity; it is the same God who speaks in both, .and the same subject of which He speaks. It was God speaking in the
message- of prophets, and God speak ing in His Son. The old revelation was fragmentary; the new is complete. The old came at intervals; the new once for all. The old had communications from God; the new is the revelation pf God. The old* contained the shadows; the new is the substance from whence the shadows came. The old was incom plete, waiting for some One, and pointing to that One; the new is cúm plete, the One anticipated has come. The old is embraced in the word, “to him give all the prophets witness” ; the new bears this testimony: “He that hath seen me [the Lord Jesus Christ] hath seen the Father.” Hence, nothing more of or from God can be found than - what is in the Son, for He is the final and complete reve lation of and from God. II. T h e P e r f e c t io n in C h r is t (Heb. 1 :4-10) Christ is the heir of all God’s pos sessions; He is “heir of all things.” To this position He has been appoint ed by God, and He will yet possess all angels, humans, powers, and cre ation, and will righteously demand and receive their full homage (cf. Phil. 2 : 10 , 11 ). Christ is the creator of all God’s works (John 1:3; Col. 1:16). The be ginning and continuation of* all his tory is by and ,for Him. All the ages were created and-are being conducted and controlled by Him. Christ is the manifestation of all God’s character. Just as the sun in the heavens is, never seen apart from its outshining, or. effulgence, so God the Father is never seen apart from Christ. The One cannot be separated from nor exist apart from the Other. When a man, by faith, sees Christ, he beholds Go.d, the Father, because Christ is thè express image, or the full character, of God. Christ is the Redeemer of all God’s people. Up to. this point, thé writer to the Hebrews speaks of almighty power, universal .sovereignty, supreme authority, and absolute wisdom. Now he speaks of infinite love, perfect weakness, supreme subjection, and ab solute obedience. The sin-purging on behalf of the fallen human race could not be accomplished by His. power, or teaching, or prayers; it required Christ’s blood. And in this passage, the words are not those of a prophet, telling what will be done, but of the Holy Spirit declaring what has been done; sin has been purged. Now the writer, of this Epistle speaks (ys, 4:10) of the superiority of Christ. He is superior to the angels
