The material o f this psalm presents the importance of the mental environment as against the mere physical dwelling place. Stress is laid upon the fact that the way in which we occupy our minds is far more important than the place where we rest the bodies which are the servants o f those minds. The Bible gives a practical answer to the problems of discontent, lack of in terest in life, unhappiness, selfishness, and a hundred kindred ills. The psalm which is suggested for this week should be coupled with a New Testament passage, 1 John 3 :24 and 4 :13-16. These parallel pas sages o f Scripture are packed with psy chology and present an answer to the questions as to how we can have fellow ship with God. The method is presented in 1 John 3:24 and 4:13-16; the result is presented in Psalm 91. I. The Way to- Fellowship. 1. The objective. a. Confession of Christ. “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son o f God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God” (1 John 4:15). “And he that keepeth his com mandments dwelleth in him, and he in him” (1 John 3:24). A fter we confess Christ (an act), we should obey Him (an at titude). 2, The subjective. a. The gift o f the Spirit, the result o f confession. “Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit" (1 John 4:13). b. The gift o f love, the result of obedience. “ He that dwelleth in love dwell eth in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16). II. The Results of Fellowship. 1. “ He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High.” a. A place of protection—“ shall abide under the shadow o f the Almighty” (v. 1). b. A place o f security— “the Lord . . . my refuge and my fortress . . . in him will I trust” (v. 2). c. A place of deliverance— “surely he shall deliver thee from the snare o f the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence” (v. 3). d. A place o f comfort—“he shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust” (v. 4). e. A place of safety— “his truth shall be thy shield and buckler” (v. 4). f. A place o f peace— “thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noon day” (vs. 5, 6). g. A place o f separation—“a thou sand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward o f the wicked” (v. 8 ). 2. He that hath made the Lord his habitation (v. 9). a. A place of preservation— “there shall no evil befall thee” (v. 10). b. Obedience to Christ.

“Uphold me with thy free spirit” (v. 12 ). “ Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made you free” (Gal. 5 :1 ). Reaching the heights is ah act o f sur render. But keeping the heights is an act of obedience. 5. Restoration o f power in service. “ Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee” (v. 13). 6. Restoration of praise. “Deliver me . . . and my tongue shall sing aloud o f thy righteous ness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise;” (vs. 14, 15). 7. Restoration of worship. “ The sacrifices o f God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. . . , Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness” (vs. 17, 19). FEBRUARY 28, 1932 The Secret of Fellowship P salm 91 Preparation H e a d a n d m e d it a t e upon one o f the following each day, selecting one or more passages from each psalm to be memorized and passed on at the first op portunity. M OND AY : Read Psalm 91. TUE SD AY : Read Psalm 92. W EDNE SD AY : Read Psalm 93. THU R SD AY : Read Psalm 94. FR ID A Y : Read Psalm 95. S A TU R D A Y : Read Psalm 96. SU N D A Y : Read Psalm 97. Expression W e climax the study for this month with the worth-while material to be found in the Ninety-first Psalm. In this psalm, we have the secret o f fellowship or com munion with God. There is a tendency in these days to overemphasize the import ance o f the physical. W e often think more o f the houses of wood, brick, and mortar in which we eat and sleep than we do of the “house which is our mind” through which wander the dreams, the memories, the hopes, the fears, and the ambitions which constitute our daily thinking. A f ter all, the body in which we reside is not the real self. Many illustrations o f this can be given. For instance, we find old war veterans insensible to their surround ings and living in memories o f the past. W e find great explorers and searchers a f ter wealth, such as Ponce de Leon, Balboa, and the thousands in the Klondike gold rush, who were willing to undergo hard ship, disease, and even death because they were dwelling in the hope of the future. W e find wealthy, unoccupied, indolent men and women living in the midst of luxury, yet they are unhappy in their beautiful homes because they are dwelling in the loneliness of selfishness; and on the other hand, we find poor, humble, hard-working people, with little of luxury but much of love, happy in spite of the circumstances which surround them.
