OCTOBER KITCHEN WOULDN’T BE THE SAME Without My Amazing Team
Some people may have difficulty asking for help and receiving help — I know I am one of those people. But a couple of months ago, I had to rely heavily on my team. Over the summer, I injured my right shoulder while weightlifting. While I’ve always experienced some minor pain over the years, this incident was the straw that broke the camel’s back — or in this case, a tendon. In June, I met with an orthopedic doctor who told me I had severe tears in my right shoulder and tendon and would have to undergo surgery. I was not looking forward to this news because I didn’t want to leave my team. But I knew I needed to have this surgery to keep myself healthy and continue supporting October Kitchen, my family and the community. I sat down with my team soon after the appointment and told them my doctor wanted me to have surgery on Oct. 25. While I was in a lot of pain, I told them I could push back the surgery until after Christmas since the holidays are the busiest time of the year for us. I didn’t want them to stress about the holidays and preparing
everything. But my team immediately told me to undergo surgery as soon as possible — they didn’t want me to experience any more pain. It was heartwarming to know they supported me and were willing to step up and take on more tasks. To prepare them, I outlined the roles and responsibilities I normally filled and how my team could take over. This included tasks like getting up early to go to the restaurant depot a couple of times a week, filling out reports and ordering all of our supplies, planning and organizing the menu, ensuring food and labor costs were covered and everything in between. While I was worried my team would be overwhelmed with these tasks and the Thanksgiving chaos we experience yearly, they handled everything with style and grace.
I MISS BEING IN THE KITCHEN AND ENGAGING WITH MY TEAM AND CUSTOMERS, BUT I KNOW OCTOBER KITCHEN IS IN GOOD HANDS.

Woman Uses Her Drone to Find Missing Animals FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS
the canine on her screen. She then gave the owners directions to the best spot for intercepting Hilda. The couple was able to retrieve their beloved furry friend just minutes before the heavy downpour came.
My team ensured everyone had a great and memorable Thanksgiving. They didn’t miss a beat while I was away — it was so flawless, you would think I was still in the kitchen. I sincerely appreciate everyone who ensured October Kitchen’s door remained open while I was away. I’m blessed to be surrounded by a team that will go above and beyond in everything they do and aren’t afraid to rise to the occasion. I couldn’t be any prouder of my team. While my team was busy preparing Thanksgiving meals and holding down the fort while I was gone, I was in a sling for six weeks. It was more challenging than I thought it would be — I didn’t realize how much I depended on my right hand and arm. While I’m no longer in a sling, I will be recovering and going to physical therapy for a little over a year to ensure I regain some of my strength. I’ve taken my time away from October Kitchen as an opportunity to reflect and find areas I can improve in my personal and professional life. ... continued from Cover When most people think of drones, they think of aerial vehicles that provide a bird’s-eye view of a sporting event, city, neighborhood or live event. Some people may think of how these vehicles are used in the military to collect data. But Erica Hart uses her drone to help those in her community find their runaway dogs. Hart created a Facebook group for people to post stories and pictures about their lost furry friends. Then, she will use her drone and help families find their beloved pets. Hart has rescued more than 200 dogs in the past seven years and doesn’t charge any money for this service — she does it solely because of her love for dogs. One of Hart’s most recent dog findings happened on Sept. 9, 2022. Hart was pushing her shopping cart down the supermarket’s aisles when she received a call about a missing schnauzer named Hilda. A thunderstorm was approaching her area, and Hart wanted to find the dog as soon as possible. So, Hart abandoned her shopping trip and raced home to launch her drone. Then, Hart drove to the last location Hilda was seen and talked to the owners about which direction the schnauzer ran. After learning that Hilda had darted off into a nearby field, Hart began to fly her drone over the area and spotted
The couple was so relieved they found Hilda before the storm. They consider Hart to be a real superhero because of how she dropped everything to help a family in need. But Hart is happy to assist anyone looking for their lost dog. Being able to reunite families with their furry friends and seeing how happy they are afterward is all the reward Hart needs. Thank you, Erica Hart, for being a shining light and helping families find their lovable, furry friends. Your acts of kindness inspire and motivate thousands of people worldwide to make an impact in their communities.
I miss being in the kitchen and engaging with my team and customers, but I know October Kitchen is in good hands. I can’t thank my team enough for their hard work and dedication. I don’t know how I will ever repay them for everything they’ve done for me. Happy Extraordinary Work Team Recognition Day to everyone on my team. Every single one of you makes October Kitchen what it is today, and your work doesn’t go unnoticed by our community or me. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together in the future. Thank you all for always having my back and showing me it’s okay to ask for and receive help when needed.

3 STRATEGIES TO KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
As we ring in 2023, many of us will create our New Year’s resolutions. A common goal many people set is to eat healthier and lose weight. However, after a few months of following this resolution, many people give up on their goals. The problem most people have is that they set unrealistic expectations for themselves. But this doesn’t mean your New Year’s resolutions are hopeless! Here are three ways to keep and achieve your nutritional goals in 2023. 1. Set different and achievable goals. Setting a goal to lose a certain amount of weight within a specific time frame sometimes isn’t attainable. Consider setting goals such as eating two more servings of fruits or vegetables each day or only drinking sodas during meals and drinking water throughout the day. These resolutions are measurable and will inspire you to continue pursuing your goals throughout the year. 2. Don’t remove food — substitute food! When most people think about eating healthier and losing weight, they may think about all the foods they have to avoid. But thinking this way can make it difficult to enjoy your meals and resolutions. Rather than focusing on the foods you can’t have, think about what you can add to your diet to make it both nutritious and delicious. Look up recipes that are great for your body but also make your mouth water. 3. Never skip a meal. Skipping breakfast, lunch or dinner won’t help your nutritional goals — it will only hinder them. If you miss a meal, your metabolism will slow down increasingly, and you may find yourself overindulging in snacks later in the day. Try not to go more than five hours without eating. Waiting too long to eat will zap your energy and make you feel less productive and motivated throughout the day. If you don’t think you can eat a full meal, eat healthy snacks throughout the day to boost your energy. At October Kitchen, we make achieving your nutrition goals fun and easy. Our dishes will make your stomach and brain happy with our mouth-watering and healthy meals. So, try one of our meals today. Your tastebuds and brain will thank you later.

How to Impress Visitors This Holiday Season
The holidays are rapidly approaching, and soon, we’ll share laughs while enjoying the festivities with our loved ones. Before the celebrations begin, you must prepare your home for visitors, especially if they stay overnight. It can be stressful whether it’s your in-laws, best friends or distant cousins coming to stay with you. You want to leave a good impression, but how do you ensure everyone’s needs are met, including yours? Here are three tips for setting yourself up for a successful holiday, regardless of who stays with you. Stock up on your guests’ favorites. Have you ever stayed with someone who didn’t have extra food for their guests? Don’t put your guests in this situation. Load up your pantry, refrigerator and cupboards with your guests’ favorite foods and drinks. If you don’t know what they are, ask ahead of their visit! Your guests will appreciate your conscientious gesture and have a much more enjoyable time if they can eat their favorites while visiting. Prepare a guest room. If your guests are staying with you, you need to prepare somewhere for them to sleep. Make sure you make up the IMPRESS THE GUESTS WITH THESE HOLIDAY HOSTING TIPS
bed, have plenty of pillows and blankets on hand and provide adequate closet space for their clothes. Even if they aren’t staying in a traditional bedroom, their sleeping area should still be ready when they arrive. Clear off a table for them to use as a nightstand and put sheets on the couch or mattress where they’ll sleep. Use real dishes. When we have company over for a meal, especially a large gathering, it’s usually easier to use plastic or paper options — saves on cleanup, too! The holidays are not necessarily the time for this shortcut. Break out the fine china if you have it, or use regular dishes for your guests. It’s okay for the kids to have paper plates, but if you want to make a good impression on visiting adults, nicer dishes will dress up the table setting and meal.
