From the business of tourism itself to air cabin crew training, the South Downs cam- pus at HSDC has a range of courses for stu- dents interested in the travel and tourism industry. If it’s working as a holiday repre- sentative, as a travel agent or in hospitali - ty - the courses offered can be the start to those career paths. The courses range from level one through to three, these include: Air Cabin Crew Training (Fast Track) Air Cabin Crew Training (Long Track) An Introduction To Hospitality, Cabin Crew & Customer Service Industries The Business Of Tourism Travel & Tourism. I spoke to one of the teachers from the air cabin crew course, Kim Hill, about what students can learn from the course and the training. The training itself takes place in the replica Boeing 747 aircraft cabin found on campus, Kim stated that students learn about “emergency and safety procedures, security, in-flight services and crewroom duties”, not only this but “dealing with inflight services, duty free and meal servic - es on flight.” Students get an insight into everyday life as someone who works in cabin crew - with what they would need to do and how to do it. As of 2022, most would agree that things are looking more promising for the travel industry. This is because in recent times, with lockdowns and travel restrictions, people miss going on holiday and want to travel more than ever after being stuck in Travel&Tourism at HSDC Besides air cabin crew, South Downs also offers a travel and tourism course.Hearing from students on the course it’s clear a huge factor of the course’s appeal is being able to work whilst travelling. One stu- dent explained how she aspires to work in the industry so she can see different parts of the world and always be meeting new people. On the course, students gain knowledge on different cultures, environ - ments, travel destinations and organisa - tions. There are a range of transferable skills students can acquire on the course. Recently, first year students have been learning about managing accommoda- tions, creating a travel and tourism busi - ness and different job roles in the sector. There are a number of components that make up the travel and tourism industry. The courses offered teach students skills to work in any hospitality role and it’s not necessarily always on-flight jobs that stu - dents are interested in. In fact, HSDC has links to carnival cruise lines, local retreats and hotels. They also have connections to travel companies such as Tui and Hays Travel. So, students can navigate through the range of job roles in the industry they’d be most interested in.
