Recognizing
Coaches are often the first ones to notice when something changes. Because athletes spend hours each week in practice and competition, you’re in a powerful position to spot early signs of distress or risky behavior before problems escalate. Many athletes won’t come forward on their own, but your calm, caring attention can open the door to a lifesaving conversation. Early recognition and response can protect athletes’ health, academic standing, safety, and overall well-being.
While in middle school, team sport participation is a protective factor against underage
drinking. As students age, team sports begin to turn from protection to risk when it comes to alcohol usage.
