Coaches matter! Your athletes will look to you as a model for their behavior and development, and will be less likely to engage in substance use or other risky behaviors if you encourage them to make healthier choices for their body and mind!
SIGNS TO WATCH FOR
Look for sustained changes in behavior, performance, or appearance. A single bad day isn’t cause for alarm, but consistent patterns are.
Physical or Performance Changes: • Unexplained drops in performance, reaction time, or stamina • Coordination changes, slower recovery, or frequent minor injuries • Bloodshot eyes,
Behavioral or Attendance Red Flags: • Repeat absences or late arrivals • Increased unreliability or forgotten commitments • Withdrawal from teammates or loss of enthusiasm
Academic or Off- Field Indicators: • Reports of failing • Teachers or parents noting changes in
grades or skipping class
attitude or engagement
Emotional or Social Changes: • Shift in friend groups or engaging with new, risk-oriented peers • Disturbing or concerning social media posts • Noticeable mood swings, irritability, or flat affect • Sudden loss of motivation, passion, or focus
unusual odors, or persistent fatigue
Best Practice: Document patterns, not hunches. A few short notes (dates, behavior, conversations) can help you spot trends and respond appropriately.
Drinking alcohol or using other substances makes it more difficult for athletes to learn from practice and games. It stops them from turning what they do and see into better skills and smarter play.
