A special «tree» grows at the Y
GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca
A special tree grows inside the lobby of the Clarence-Rockland YMCA/YWCA. Its branches hang heavy with tuques andmit- tens, thanks to the giving nature of many Y patrons and others supporting the Our Giving Tree project. «This year is the very first year for this,» said Stephanie Leduc, Ymembership coor- dinator and originator of the project. «I was looking around in the community for some- thing like a snowsuit fund or such.» Leduc contacted both the city hall and the Valoris office and said she was told there was no regular snowsuit fund program in place to provide local children in need with warm winter clothing. There are some groups that sponsor «snowsuit» donation drives. Valoris provided Leduc with a contact person who would be able to help her distribute any winter clothing items collected through the Y, thus planting the seed for the Our Giving Tree project. «I hope to see this have a snowball effect,» Leduc said, adding that it could become a regular community project if themomentum proves large enough with this first year’s effort.
Stephanie Leduc holds up one of many donations of winter clothing for children for the Clarence-Rockland YMCA/YWCA’s Our Giving Tree project.
So far, dozens of tuques, scarves, pairs of mitts, coats, and a few snowsuits, all suitable in size for children, have come into the Y and found their way either on the tree or in the donation box beside it. The project began
Dec. 5 and, as of mid-December, almost two large sackfuls of clothing have been collected. Any type of winter clothing suitable for a child is acceptable, so long as it is either new or just «gently used» and in good condition. All clothing collected will be turned over for distribution on Jan. 2 of next year.
