I I Cor. 9:1- 11. Abounding Grace. Giving is always an im portant p art of Christian duty. God’s cause always requires support and the poor also are always w ith us, thus calling for charity on th e ir te h a lf. If we know of a fellow believer who is in need, our sympathy should go out toward him, and where th e re is sympathy th ere is always the desire to help. Christians are all chil dren of the one F ath er. When one suffers, all should feel th e pain and try to give relief. In n a tu re when one branch of a tree is bruised or injured, all th e other branches send a p a rt of th e ir v itality to heal th e wound. So ought it to be in th e Church whose members are branches of th e tru e Vine, John 15:5. Christ is in every child of His and therefo re th e kindness we show to th e least of those who belong to Him, we show to Him. This makes it possible to m inister directly and con stan tly to Him. SUNDAY, October 30. Isa. 28:1-13. D runkenness in National Life. This prophecy was spoken in the early p art of th e reign of Hezekiah. Ephraim was th e name given to the ten trib e s making up the- N orthern kingdom. The nation had plunged headlong into all kinds of sin, especially the sin of intemperance, un til th e land was filled w ith drunkards. This chap te r teaches th a t th e prosperity of a nation given to drink is as a fading flower. I t also reveals the fact th a t God is against a nation th a t is given to strong drink and instead of supremacy and victory, it shall be trodden under foot by its enemies. The symptoms of defeat and failu re are predicted in graphic and strik ing sentences which set fo rth th e incapacity and, insubordi nation of th e drunkard. The same things are tru e of th e nation and of th e individual. MONDAY, October 31. Acts 21:18-26. P au l’s Welcome. The b reth ren received P au l gladly, v. 17. Nowhere is th e church rep re sented as tak ing any p a rt against Paul. Jam es and P au l are face to face and
see eye to eye. The church a t Jeru sa lem hears th e story of th e conversion of th e Gentiles and glorifies th e Lord. Spiritual un ity prevails from Jerusalem to Corinth, although the Jerusalem church is made up en tirely of Jews, P au l is received as a messenger of God. Possi bly th e generous offerings he brought w ith him to be poured into th e coffers of th e m other church made his recep tion th e more cordial. Paul, however, has been slandered among th e believers a t Jerusalem as everywhere else and James, anxious th a t P au l shall have an unreserved welcome among th e Jews, devises a plan by which P au l may vindi cate him self from th e false charges th a t were being circulated by his enemies;
