My Daughter Heads to High School

This time last year I wrote about going to my 30-year high school reunion with my family. But as summer 2017 draws to a close, it’s my daughter’s high school years that are on my mind. That’s because in August she’ll be a freshman at Fletcher High, which is also where my wife teaches (Go Senators! Go Purple Pride!). It’s one of those moments where you realize what’s happening, step back, and go, “Whoa!” It seems like a short while ago she was just a kid. But when I really think about it — and about the young lady she’s becoming — I realize that those days are definitely in the rearview mirror. Danielle is a rock star, and I couldn’t be prouder of her accomplishments these last few years. She just got back from her third year of church camp, and now she’s talking about wanting to be

have them both in my life, and I look forward to seeing what this year brings. I know there will be challenges ahead, but there will also be good times with family. I’m glad we had this summer to enjoy with the family. With my wife teaching and my kids in school most of the year, it’s been nice to see them get a well-deserved break to regroup and recharge. We went up to North Carolina for a while and did some camping. We saw waterfalls, visited Asheville, and had a good time. That said, the Kopp household is ready for the next big thing!

a counselor there in the future. She’s very involved in National Honor Society. Her involvement in our church is growing, and she’s excited about doing more there as well. High school will bring a lot of great opportunities, and she’s entering it with a solid group of friends that she grew up with, particularly the girls on her soccer team. I grew up in the same town my entire childhood, and I’m happy to say that my daughter and my son have done the same. This consistency has really allowed them to know where they’re headed and to hold on to some tight relationships with other “kids” they’ve known their entire lives. The same is true of my son as well, who’s in his last year before middle school this fall. He is on the safety patrol, involved with honor society, and excelling like my daughter. I feel blessed to

See you at a Senators football game this year,

GET POPPIN’

Shake Up Movie Night With Crazy (Healthy) Popcorn Recipes

Popcorn is considered to be a fairly healthy snack by most experts, especially when compared to other salty treats, like corn chips. Unfortunately, microwave popcorn is another matter. Many popular popcorn brands use trans fats, which the Centers for Disease Control estimate are related to 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths annually. Additionally, a study from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health identified a connection between the chemical diacetyl, used to flavor microwave popcorn, and cases of lung disease in workers at popcorn factories. For popcorn lovers, the answer is clear: Make popcorn yourself! Pour ¼ cup of popcorn kernels into a regular brown paper bag, fold the top of the bag shut tight, then pop in microwave for about two minutes, or until popping slows to a second between pops.Voila! Fresh popcorn

popcorn and shake well inside of bag. Repeat with remaining mixture. Whether you’re preparing for a movie marathon or need an after-school snack, any of these recipes will be a tasty alternative to the chemicals saturating microwave popcorn. Enjoy!

The NFL Scouting Combine Tests Do you ever wonder how your athleticism stacks up against the NFL players you watch on the field every Sunday? Well, it’s actually not too hard to find out. Every spring, the top prospects for the NFL draft participate in the scouting combine, where they perform tests in front of representatives from every team. You can easily replicate these tests and see how you compare to the pros. At the combine, players test strength by bench- pressing 225 pounds as many times as they can. You can choose a weight that you feel comfortable with. Make sure you have a spotter on hand. Athletic Prowess Test Your

The vertical and broad jumps measure the height and length of your jump, respectively. To find your vertical, reach your hand as high as you can to get a baseline measurement. Jump as high as you can from a standstill, reaching your hand up again. The difference between these heights will determine your vertical. The broad jump is a standing long jump. The difference between the start line and your heels at landing will give you your score.

The 40-yard dash, which is exactly what it sounds like, is a test of raw speed. The 40 is the headline event of the combine, and a player’s draft stock can rise and fall based on a few tenths of a second. The shuttle drill tests lateral quickness and acceleration. Starting in a three-point stance (one hand on the ground), sprint five yards to the right, then 10 yards to the left, placing a hand on the ground at each stopping point. Finish with a five- yard sprint back to the starting line.

Cure for the Common Cold? Echinacea Might Be the Herb You’re Looking For

Echinacea was a very trendy herb in the late 1980s, but it fell out of popularity as the public went on to the next big thing. However, there are many reasons why this fantastic herb should have a place in everyone’s medicine cabinet. The active substances in echinacea can boost immune function, helping relieve pain and reduce inflammation. While an outright cure for the common cold remains elusive, research from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that echinacea might be the herb you need to get back on your feet faster. Clinical trials show that participants who took a dose of echinacea via a pill or a tincture right when they began to feel sick reduced the length of their cold by one to four days. Fifty-eight percent of participants avoided experiencing a cold altogether.

Echinacea tea is also extremely beneficial in treating a cold.Another study followed people with early cold or flu symptoms, such as runny nose, sore throat, or fever. The study found that participants who drank several cups of echinacea tea throughout the day for five days experienced shorter periods of sickness than those who drank tea without echinacea. Due to the way echinacea interacts with the immune system, individuals on medication that suppresses the immune system should not take any form of echinacea. People with diabetes, tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis, and any autoimmune diseases are also advised against taking echinacea. The effectiveness of echinacea is helping the herb quickly become one of the most popular holistic supplements in North America. Just be sure you speak with a doctor before giving anyone in your family a new supplement.
