RECONNECTING COMMUNITIES

REFLECTIONS ON PUTTING DATA INTO ACTION Volunteers are a critical part of the philanthropic and charitable sector. In 2018, almost 13 million Canadians volunteered, and more than half (58%) of charities were completely volunteer- run. Declining volunteerism directly impacts charities and nonprofits’ ability to survive and serve their communities. How do young people stay engaged in volunteerism as they move into other stages of their lives? Would we benefit from a volunteerism strategy that supports charities and nonprofits across the country?

In 2013, 36% of people volunteered, which means volunteering rates have declined by 12% in the past 10 years.

Volunteerism has dropped among all age groups, but the youngest people continue to volunteer at the highest levels.
