Half empty store shelves in Almonte, Vankleek Hill, and Bourget, have customers wondering if Mike Dean’s Stores are closing.

Closing or not closing? Will Mike Dean’s continue to be part of the Vankleek Hill landscape. Questioned on the issue on Thursday morning, Mike Dean’s owner Gordon Dean quickly denied any rumours to this effect in an email, dismissing by the same token a comment to this effect made by Champlain mayor, Gary Barton, during theMay 13 council meeting. Over the last few weeks, empty shelves have sparked rumours to this effect. “I went into Mike Dean’s last week, and a lot of the shelves were empty,” recently stated Carole Macleod of Green Valley, about the Vankleek Hill store. “I like stopping there on my way home from work. It’s very convenient. But now the shelves are half empty and they have very little I need. I would hate to see it close. But that’s what it looks like.” Questioned last week on the issue, Vankleek Hill storemanager Susan Lévesque simply replied that she had no comment. “As far as I know, it’s just restructuring, not closing. But that’s just conjecture. I know as much as you do.” Empty shelves were also observed at the Almonte and Bourget locations. However, the stores in Chesterville, Sharbot Lake, and Winchester looked like they were a little low on some merchandise. But store shelves seemed generally full and customers were plenty. Mike Dean’s has been part of the Vankleek Hill landscape for more than a dozen years, giving jobs to several local residents and students, as well as convenience to residents, tourists, and passersby. The same could be said of the Almonte and Bourget stores. Mayor Barton said a new store will be taking Mike Dean’s place, but he didn’t know when that would happen, or what store would be taking over the building. TheMike Dean’s chain began in 1976 when Mike Dean bought the former Laflamme grocery store in Chesterville. Dean soon married Nancy, and they continued to run the business along with their children, Gordon and Julie. Mike Dean’s stores now operate in Chesterville, Almonte, Bourget, Sharbot Lake, Vankleek Hill, and Winchester, along with a head office and warehouse in Winchester.
