The Newest Member of Our Team

W e are extremely excited to have EVE on our team! EVE works 24 hours a day, is extremely fast and capable, has a limitless memory, and is always in the office. Okay, you might have guessed it already, but EVE is the “robot” in the picture. EVE is the latest generation of the iTero Element 2 scanner system. This intraoral scanner records over 600 high-definition pictures per second of your teeth in full color. These pictures are stitched together to create a fully digital, 3D map of the surfaces of the teeth. These digital maps are able to completely replace the stone models we would record with the “goopy” impressions or molds. By moving towards digital impressions, we are able to eliminate inaccuracy and errors that are more common with traditional impressions. Plus, we will be able to keep a digital record that can be stored and referenced for months, years, or even decades! Patients love the ability to have impressions taken digitally, without the mess — gagging, drooling, pulling, and stretching — associated with traditional impressions. As an added benefit, the storage of these digital “molds” means that we may never have to take impressions again, and, in the case of our new digital night guards, we are able to offer a lifetime of replacements in the click of a button. For patients that have been thinking about straightening their teeth, the iTero scanner and Invisalign outcome simulator allow us to provide a preview of exactly what your new smile will look like in two minutes! Be sure to ask about EVE at your next appointment, or, if you have been thinking about Invisalign and would like EVE to preview your smile, see inside for more information about our very first Invisalign Day on Oct. 9!

JUST ONE MORE BITE HOWTHE CLEAN PLATE PHENOMENON MAY BE KILLING YOUR DIET

As you celebrate your last backyard barbecue, consider this: If someone puts three helpings of potato salad on your plate, would you feel pressured to finish it? According to nutrition experts, this pressure to finish your plate is making people indulge a little too much. Dubbed the “clean plate phenomenon,” this overindulgence is troubling. Researchers have discovered that people feel pressured to clean their plates even when they feel satisfied or full. Even people who don’t fill their plates all the way often reach for that last piece or second helping because “one more bite won’t hurt.” Experts speculate that this compulsion could have stemmed from habits passed down from World War II, when rationing food was required for most, or from a fear of wasting food. Most people have, at some point, heard an adult say to a child, “Eat up; there are starving children in the world.” But all those “one more bites” add up. Researchers from Vanderbilt University conducted a study in which participants were served individual plates with any number of cookies piled

on top. They were instructed to eat three cookies, and afterward, researchers asked each of them if they wanted more. Those who had only one or two cookies left on their plates were more likely to indulge in a fourth or fifth cookie, while those who had no cookies left or had too many cookies left said they were full. Despite what you think about your own diet, this isn’t a problem sequestered to certain parties. Studies have found that plates and portion sizes in the U.S. have increased by about 20% since the 1970s. The same psychology that propelled humans to eat just a little bit more to survive is now contributing to serious overeating and a staggering calorie intake. There are a few simple tricks you can use to break this habit. Use smaller plates or measure out your food portions so you can clean your plate without guilt. You can also get into the habit of leaving a few bites on your plate to retrain your brain that it’s okay to not finish your food. (You can use your leftover food for compost or save it for later!) With a little effort and intention, you can break free of the pressure to clean your plate.

What Is Causing Your Teeth to Stain? AVOIDING DISCOLORATION AND KEEPING YOUR TEETH WHITE

surface of teeth, they can fill in rough parts or fine cracks that make staining more likely.

Everyone enjoys having a bright, white smile, but it can be difficult to maintain. Foods and drinks can affect the color of your teeth, even with regular brushing and whitening. Knowing what stains your teeth will help you take steps to avoid or prevent future discoloration.

Simple Methods to Keep Teeth Bright

Why Foods Stain Teeth

Three main substances alter the color of teeth: chromogens, tannins, and acids. Chromogens are strong pigments that cling to tooth enamel and often create more stubborn stains if they mix with other stain-enhancing factors like tannins, which are chemicals commonly found in black teas. Acidic foods or drinks, such as berries and soft drinks, soften and erode enamel, making it easier for the tooth to stain.

Using whitening products, such as toothpaste and

mouthwash, are a great way to whiten your teeth at home. Both of these options not only remove surface stains on the enamel

but also prevent cavities, fight off gum disease, and freshen breath. You can also use whitening strips at home, which are quick, easy, and cost-efficient. To keep your teeth pearly white, you don’t have to give up foods that are more likely to stain your teeth. By practicing and maintaining healthy oral hygiene habits, your teeth can remain as white as ever!

One of the easiest ways to prevent liquids from staining teeth is to drink from a straw. This ensures coffee, tea, soda, or alcohol will have less contact with teeth. Another good habit is to drink water or brush your teeth directly after a meal so staining substances aren’t left on your teeth unchecked for the rest of the day. Biannual dental visits are also a great way to remove or prevent stains. When dentists polish the
