Since the end of January, FINAT, national label associations and individual label printers have ap- pealed to the parties concerned in the strike to take into consideration the broader impact of the dispute to their downstream customers: labelstock producers, label manufacturers, brand-owners, re- tailers and, finally, the consumers in the shops or online. So far, these appeals have not been reflect- ed in an acceleration of the negotiation process. “As we have seen during the Pandemic, labels are an indispensable component of the essential in- frastructure that are difficult to replace,” said FI- NAT President Philippe Voet. “Without an adequate pipeline of raw materials, label converters will be forced to extend lead times, prioritize customers, put part of the capacity on hold and send work- ers on leave because there are simply not enough materials to convert to labels. We once again ap- peal to the partners engaged in the dispute to do everything possible to resume production without further delay. Against the already tight supply chain conditions since last summer and now the hideous invasion of Ukraine by a neighboring country, a further extension of the strike even beyond the cur- rent date of April 2 would be socially and econom- ically unsustainable.”

since last summer, the fortunes of the label indus- try have turned dramatically since the beginning of 2022 by long-lasting union strikes in a specialty paper mill in Finland and recently, another supplier in Spain. The mills on strike are responsible for more than 25 percent of the paper grades used for the manu- facture of materials used to print, embellish and cut self-adhesive labels in Europe. Although the supply chain of raw materials for labels has been under- pinned relatively successfully in early 2022 by la- bel converters themselves (largely funded by the strong preceding trade period and existing label material reserves), this trend is unlikely to continue into the second quarter of 2022. Persistent self-ad- hesive materials shortages could then severely dis- rupt the supply of functional and regulatory labels and packaging in food, pharmaceutical, healthcare and logistics sectors around Europe. Reaching The Stars Assuming an average “gross” size of 10 cm2 per label, 8.5 billion square meters consumed in Eu- rope per annum corresponds with an astronomic amount of nearly 16.5 billion labels consumed each week. That’s nearly 50 labels per capita (per week).

Waste Circularity is promoting a transformative vi- sion where mixed complex waste is converted to syn- gas, and then syngas is converted to “waste-derived” Eco-Methanol. The Consortium sees Eco-Methanol as the key for the packaging industry for achieving true circularity for all of its carbon-based packaging waste. Since methanol is a primary feedstock chem- ical for subsequent manufacture of many products and plastics, Eco-Methanol represents an opportu- nity to boost recovery of waste as well as “recycled content” in products and packaging. UPM Raflatac Achieves Sustainability Certification UPM Raflatac has achieved sustainability certifi- cation from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Scheme ISCC Plus at its Nancy factory in France. This certification is an addition to UPM Raflatac’s already extensive ISCC Plus certi- fication portfolio. UPM Raflatac’s ISCC PLUS prod- ucts are certified via a mass-balance approach. Moving Beyond Fossils UPM Raflatac said it aims to be the first label ma- terial company beyond fossils. To enable the trans- formation from fossil-based materials to renewables or recycled content, and from a linear to a circu- lar economy, it is important that the raw materials come from sustainable sources via a verifiable and transparent value chain. ISCC PLUS is reportedly one of the leading global sustainability certification schemes for a fully trace- able supply chain to support the transition to a cir- cular economy and bioeconomy. The certification scheme allows biobased raw materials as well as waste and residue-based feedstock for plastic labels to be certified. Nancy factory is located in Northeast of France and has started operations in 1990. The factory employs around 190 people. The factory is special- ized in wine and spirits product labeling, but also some other special product ranges for retail, logis- tic, pharmaceutical, food or industrial end-use seg- ments are produced on the site.

Following atma.io’s recent win in the FDA food trace- ability challenge and the announcement of its partner- ship with Higg, the new atma.io Spring 2022 release focuses on sustainability and waste elimination. The new feature, Real-time Carbon Impact Ana- lytics, provides brands with data-driven insights re- garding the carbon footprint of their products, in- cluding Scope 3 emissions and beyond. Third-party manufacturing environmental impact data, including those provided for the apparel in- dustry by the Higg Index, also factors into these insights. This data is then used alongside atma.io’s artificial intelligence to deliver verifiable end-to-end visibility of the brand’s emissions at an item level across the supply chain. The atma.io Real-time Waste Elimination Tool uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to ana- lyze and alert on anomalies and inefficiencies across the supply chain. This includes information about the overdue movement of products at a pallet level or even isolated individual items within a warehouse that are close to perishing or otherwise lost. The new release will also add several additional functionalities, including sustainability facility as- sessments and expiration callouts, global inventory trace, loss prevention and purchase order tracking.

Meyers Joins Climate Pledge

Meyers, a national provider of branded packag- ing, product labeling, and retail in-store display solutions for global brands, has joined The Climate Pledge alongside 300 other businesses, including Amazon, BestBuy, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Uni- lever, Nespresso, Quorn, and others. The Climate Pledge is a commitment to net zero carbon by 2040 that forms a cross-sector community of companies and organizations, working together to crack the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy. The Climate Pledge was co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, and it calls on signatories to be net zero carbon across their businesses by 2040. Companies and organizations that sign the Pledge commit to three areas of action: • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis; • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency im- provements, renewable energy, materials reduc- tions, and other carbon emission elimination strat- egies; and • Neutralize any remaining emissions with ad- ditional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and social- ly-beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual car- bon emissions by 2040. Avery Dennison Acquires Catchpoint’s Linerless IP Avery Dennison Corporation has acquired the lin- erless label technology developed by Catchpoint Ltd, a UK company based in Yorkshire, England. The purchase covers Catchpoint’s patents, brand, trade secrets and know-how. Arrangements have been made to ensure the continued support of the Catchpoint team. Under the agreement, Avery Den- nison will honor Catchpoint’s existing commercial agreements. “With the acquisition of Catchpoint, Avery Denni- son will have intellectual property that helps us ful- fill two of our main 2030 sustainability goals: to de- liver innovations that advance the circular economy, and to reduce environmental impact in operations and technology,” said Noel Kasmi, VP Marketing, Av- ery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials EMEA. A key strategic priority for Avery Dennison is to innovate in the area of more sustainable product solutions.
