Steelfort 80th

Two Long-Standing Kiwi Brands Marking Major Milestones

Steelfort would like to congratulate Newstalk ZB for 100 years in operation, wishing you well for the future. - John McOviney

A s Steelfort celebrates 80 years, it is proud to share this milestone with Newstalk ZB celebrating 100 years, two proud New Zealand stories built on trust and connection. Both organisations have grown alongside generations of Kiwis, reflecting the resilience, innovation, and values that have helped shape our nation. Steelfort’s journey began in 1946 when founder Frank McOviney, an immigrant from Yugoslavia (now Croatia), purchased Fuller Engineering, a small reel mower manufacturing business producing around 200 mowers annually. Building on his existing company, Terrazzo (NZ) Ltd, McOviney recognised the potential of stainless steel and established Steelfort Engineering to manufacture stainless steel products for New Zealand homes, many of which were being built for returning servicemen and women from the second world war. From those early beginnings, Steelfort developed a reputation for quality craftsmanship and innovation. The company’s lawnmower heritage has remained central to its identity, with its own trusted LawnMaster brand evolving

alongside generations of New Zealand families. Since its early days producing cylinder mowers, LawnMaster has become synonymous with reliable outdoor power equipment, helping Kiwis maintain their gardens, lifestyles, and properties for decades. Over eight decades, Steelfort has continued to adapt and grow, expanding from stainless steel manufacturing and lawnmowers into commercial fabrication, outdoor power equipment, and international brand partnerships. Mr Frank McOviney Senior passed away in 1983, and now, under the leadership of his son, John McOviney, the company developed strong relationships with respected global brands including Miele, Cub Cadet, and Hustler, while continuing to invest in its own products and people. Today, Steelfort operates from modern facilities in Palmerston North, Auckland, and Christchurch, employing nearly 100 people and representing 10 brands across six product categories. While manufacturing and markets have changed, Steelfort’s foundations remain the same: quality, innovation, and a commitment to New Zealand customers.
