Proaudio Sound Press: As a Leo, known for your energetic and vibrant personality, how do you infuse your star sign's qualities into your DJ persona, particularly as Essential Groove? DJ Essential Groove: I feel that my Leo star sign definitely aligns with the character of Essential Groove, the lion of the zodiac which is known to take things easy during the day and at night comes out to play. I love to make people happy and truly enjoy expressing my happiness through music. Proaudio Sound Press: Essential Groove is renowned for playing an extensive range of genres. How do you decide which genres to incorporate into a set, and is there a particular genre you find most challenging or rewarding to mix? How has your music style changed over the years? Essential Groove: Essential Groove has always embraced all genres of music and was never married to one. I would say in the early days I played more deep house but that evolved to playing literally all genres. For me, the key element to a successful set is reading the crowd.
I never plan an exact set unless it is for a genre- specific event at a larger festival type setting. Most of the time, I would come prepared with a range of music and different genres which my main goal is to seamlessly transition between. I always talk of when the stars align on the night, which is when I have properly read the crowd and they are just loving every track I play. That is what I strive for and what I find ultimately rewarding. Proaudio Sound Press:Your commitment to playing vinyl in a digital age is noteworthy. What is it about vinyl that keeps you loyal, and how do you think it impacts your connection with the music and the audience? Essential Groove: For me, vinyl is the reason I initially fell in love with DJing. I own a significant collection of vinyl records and will always jump at the opportunity to get to play them. I will never forget my roots of why I began this journey and love to return to the art of vinyl mixing regardless of advances in technology. The nostalgic value is extremely noteworthy for myself and also for party-goers from that era. For me, it is a romantic connection with the music, almost like an ode to a bygone time.
