Our Stategic Vision and Purpose ENG

OUR ENABLING FOUNDATIONS We recognise the wide contribution that our University makes to society, our economy and the deeper cultural values of the nation. The success of our core activities rests upon the enabling foundations that support everything we do. Implementing our new faculty structure will help us to be more efficient and resilient, but we must also plan for a sustainable future which balances wise investment in new facilities against the need to continually support and improve our existing physical and digital infrastructure. We need to be professionally led in a well-governed environment, and we will continually adapt our communication tools to ensure that our staff, students and community understand our decisions. We will be ever more international in our outlook, and will look widely to recruit the very best students and staff who share our ambition.

LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE: We value our leaders at every level in our University and recognise their fundamental role in championing our vision and delivering our strategy. Leadership plays a vital part in shaping our principled culture and we will invest in our leaders through training and mentoring. At the same time, we will work with our University Council to shape and further strengthen our governance structures. As we adapt to the changing external environment our leaders will be visible and trusted role models who give us the confidence to respond to challenges and opportunities as they arise. We will also be honest with ourselves and our community, and have open conversations about Race, Gender and Disability; building our reputation as a trusted and reliable partner. SUSTAINABILITY: We will strive to be financially and environmentally resilient and will invest strategically and responsibly to deliver our ambitions. We will support the Welsh Government’s drive towards a more sustainable environment and recognise that our University must contribute towards environmental targets and that we have a role to play in supporting others to do so. We will endeavour to be a carbon-zero university by 2040 and will support our local community with sustainability projects and social enterprise initiatives.

INTERNATIONALISATION: Our international strategy commits us to growing our international student numbers, to strengthening our international strategic partnerships in Europe, the USA, China and Canada, to growing our global research networks and to achieving a stronger global profile for our University. We will infuse intercultural and global perspectives throughout our teaching, research, enterprise and student experience, and we will embed them within our civic mission to ensure that our international experiences have local impact. DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL ESTATE: We recognise the strategic value that our digital infrastructure can add to our teaching and research, as well as to reducing our physical footprint and enhancing our drive to be more sustainable. We will invest in safe and secure digital services to support and augment our work, enabling our research, maximising learning opportunities, and ensuring that we can deliver our ambitions efficiently and sustainably. Proud of our recent £450 million investment in our Bay Campus, we will continue to invest in our physical estate to ensure that our students and colleagues have comparable experiences regardless of which campus they are based at.

COMMUNICATION: We are proud of the engagement we have with our University community and will expand the platforms and forums we use to listen to our colleagues and stakeholders. We will be open, honest and transparent in our communications, building trust and confidence inside and outside our University. We will celebrate success and provide timely and consistent information, and we will not hide from difficult conversations. We will find more ways to engage with harder to reach groups, and our leadership teams will be accessible and approachable. RECRUITMENT: We will continue to attract talented colleagues to join our community, welcoming the fresh and diverse perspectives and experiences they bring to our academic and professional services teams. In return, we will support our colleagues to achieve excellence and to pursue their career ambitions. We will provide mentoring, training and tailored professional development opportunities, and will recognise and reward appropriately our colleagues’ success.
