Beginning January 1, 2027, South Dakotans will have a new way to support students and expand school choice for families. The Education Freedom Tax Credit allows individuals to contribute to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization and receive a nonrefundable federal income-tax credit of up to $1,700 annually. For more than a decade, South Dakota Partners in Education has awarded tax-credit scholarships to students attending accredited private schools across South Dakota. Donors will make their federal tax-credit contributions directly to SDPE and may direct their scholarship support to any participating accredited private Kâ12 school of their choice in South Dakota. SDPE will initially focus on tuition scholarships and will report required contribution information to the IRS while providing donors with the documentation needed to claim the credit.

The federal tax-credit program is scheduled to begin January 1, 2027, and remains subject to final Treasury and IRS regulations and SGO approval requirements. SDPE cannot accept federal tax-credit contributions before that date. Donors should consult their tax advisors.
