The story of your breast health has you at the center. Regular mammograms can catch breast cancer early, at its most treatable stage. Most women should start annual screenings at age 40. If you’re under 40 years old but have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your primary care provider about when to start screening. Visit edith.sanfordhealth.org to learn more.

Meet Michelle The day before her annual mammogram, Michelle Buffalo Knuppe gave herself a quick self-exam and felt something unusual. The next day at her appointment, she was immediately rescheduled for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, where providers discovered the lumps were cancer.

“After my surgery, he let me stay in the hospital an extra day,” she said. “There was no rushing. They just let me heal.” Now, Buffalo Knuppe has been cancer-free for two and a half years. She still takes an ongoing medication but can mostly reflect on cancer as part of her past.

Her first thought was, “Why me?”

Buffalo Knuppe is a healthy person. She eats well, runs daily, limits her alcohol consumption and has no family history of the disease. And while these factors can lower the risk of breast cancer, they don’t eliminate it. Quickly, she found herself in a whirlwind of information, appointments and procedures. Luckily, she had a care team ready to guide her through every step of treatment and recovery. “I loved having a nurse navigator,” she said. “I could message her with every little question.” Buffalo Knuppe’s surgeon, Jesse Dirksen, MD, also played a critical role in her care.

She’s back to daily runs with her yellow lab, Bella, and offers this advice to anyone facing a breast cancer diagnosis:

“ Trust your

feelings, trust your doctors and trust the process.”

GETTING WEIRD WITH MARKETING jon oppold

of a mascot as I could think of…so we’ve built a community around dogs in fun, quirky ways.”

“I’m proud to be a person who’s always creating and finding fun ways to express myself and share my uniqueness with the world…It’s fun and cathartic, and everyone should try it,” said Jon Oppold . The Sioux Falls entrepreneur has made a name for himself in the food and drink industry with Sunny’s Pizzeria , The Orion Pub , and Polar Bites (recently becoming the new owner last month). Not only is he passionate about creating gathering places for the community, but he’s equally as passionate about building strong, unique brands behind them. Oppold started his professional life in corporate marketing and communications and says he began feeling jaded and restless in that setting, itching for more. With a background as a designer, writer, and “creative jack-of-all-trades,” he wanted to step away and put his talents toward his own endeavors. “After over a decade of creating brands, ads, blogs, and campaigns, I wanted the opportunity to build a brand and create marketing that’s silly and fun and uniquely showcases my personality unencumbered by the analysis paralysis and prototypical corporate groupthink,” recalled Oppold. One July afternoon in 2019, he noticed a laundromat building for lease close by to Augustana University that he had his eye on, and swooped in and opened Sunny’s Pizzeria . Oppold’s vision for the Sunny’s brand has always been about “getting weird” in a quirky, approachable, family- friendly way and conveying it’s a neighborhood space. “I’m not Italian, and the food’s not supposed to be authentic or snooty—we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and I wanted it to be fun to interact with our brand,” he said. “I chose the dog, Sunny , as the mascot because I personally didn’t want to be the focus. A French Bulldog is about as friendly and approachable

The owner has used his design skills to make everything from custom pizza boxes to an array of stickers to a wall of customer dog photos with silly captions and much more. Two marketing moments Oppold has created that can be enjoyed by the community outdoors includes a mural of famous South Dakotans that has a new persona added each year, and witty sayings changing now and again on the Sunny’s marquee sign (i.e. "Our pizza slaps harder than Will Smith "). Oppold’s second project with co-owner Thomas Hentges , The Orion Pub , opened in 2023 and was given its own creative spin. Utilizing antiques and their vision, the pair curated their own retro neighborhood bar a la the 1970s in downtown Sioux Falls. “I intentionally created a brand that was made to feel unassuming and inclusive. At the time, downtown felt devoid of a working class bar that catered to a more mature audience,” said Oppold. “We were looking to be sort of a throwback bar that carries and promotes classic beer brands on tap ( Hamm’s , Coors Banquet , PBR , Old Style , Grain Belt ), so I gravitated to the idea of making our marketing look like dusty old beer ads you’d find in a magazine from the ‘70s and ‘80s.”

He reached out to his favorite local film photographer Cassia McLoone to help recreate the imagery.

“It’s been fun sort of going back in time to create a brand that is intended to be gritty, nostalgic, and a little rough around the edges,” he said.

“ART IS NOT VALUED THE WAY IT SHOULD BE IN OUR SOCIETY, AND HUMAN EXPRESSION IS SO IMPORTANT TO OUR LIVES AND THE WAY WE PERCEIVE THE WORLD AND INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER.”

ART + DESIGN

WHAT ARE ALL THE HATS YOU WEAR WITHIN YOUR BUSINESSES?

Outside of the boring minutia of licensing and bookkeeping and taxes and paperwork, I’m the in-house handyman at both businesses, but my passion is in everything marketing and branding. I’ve personally created every logo, every ad, every social post (outside of Instagram stories for the pub, which is Thomas’s specialty), every piece of merch, every in-house promotional sign, every coupon, everything that required professional design has been my work over the past seven years. I can’t think of another owner in my industry, at least locally, that can say that.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATION AND ART AS IT PERTAINS TO BUSINESS, PROMOTION, ENGAGEMENT, AND CONNECTION?

I think art and creation and the whole concept of human expression has never been more important than it is right now at this moment. Big tech is creating programs that cut out human expression, and I think where we’re heading with AI and the automation of art is so lame and uninteresting and, frankly, bad for humanity. When small businesses create brands that showcase their personality and stand out, it sets the expectation for what customers will encounter when they visit the establishment. I think it’s incredibly important to differentiate businesses and help local brands connect with local people. I’m a huge proponent of art and, although we host an art market in conjunction with Prints & Repeat each summer, I’d love to do more events with the art community.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

One thing that’s been fun for me as a creative person who owns businesses in the food and beverage industry is the notion that every place the business interacts with a customer is a brand touchpoint, and every touchpoint— including the menus we create and the food we serve—is an opportunity to be intentional and create something unique…whether that means unique ingredients, a uniquely silly name, the way we display it on a menu, or how we photograph it for use in our marketing. Every touchpoint is a choice…a deliberate choice that requires attention to detail, and there’s artistry in that.

Creating is my favorite thing, bar none…and I love that I’ve created a space where I can be creative and showcase my personality in ways that are unencumbered by the thoughts and opinions of other people. Being able to try stuff, be weird, have fun, and be creative in an attempt to get attention for the business and seeing it actually work the way I intended has been so validating after over a decade of having my work sanitized by clients and superiors in the corporate world. I’ve been able to make things I’m truly proud of, and that’s been very rewarding.

South Dakota State University has reached a milestone in outreach and connection. The SDSU Metro Center is the institution’s first permanent building to open its doors in the heart of Sioux Falls—the state’s largest economic hub. This new center comes after Avera Health gifted the space to the SDSU Alumni & Foundation, which turned it into an education center for nursing, pharmacy, respiratory care, medical laboratory science and public health programs complete with simulation and clinical rooms, labs and regular classrooms. Not only will the Metro Center offer advanced health care education, but it will also offer admissions services through its full-time, boots-on-the- ground admissions team, strengthening connections with Sioux Falls schools, community members and leaders. By expanding access to higher education and creating new opportunities for engagement, the center advances SDSU’s mission to serve the state with heart, purpose and lasting impact. Transforming South Dakota’s Future from Sioux Falls

SDSU METRO CENTER IN SIOUX FALLS

This reflects SDSU’s broader efforts to reach South Dakotans across the state. As SDSU President Barry H. Dunn explains, “SDSU has a responsibility to its land-grant mission of providing the benefits of higher education to those who seek it, and the more we can connect with South Dakota, the more positively they view our academic excellence, research, workforce development and impact on communities.” Building relationships creates trust and lays the foundation for students, industries and leaders to shape a stronger future. When South Dakota students choose to earn their degree from SDSU, those connections can extend beyond graduation with more than 73% of them going on to live and work in our state, directly pouring into its economy. That is the greater impact of SDSU: preparing people to meet the needs of today while building the pipeline for the needs of tomorrow, ultimately helping build a Greater SDState.

Responding to workforce needs in the state As the largest medical hub in the state, Sioux Falls houses major corporate headquarters and large-scale regional facilities, supporting a massive portion of the state’s clinical and administrative medical employment. A dominant market like this needs a strong workforce. SDSU is answering the need. SDSU leads the Regental system in health care degrees and helps students prepare for and find job opportunities in this high-demand field. The SDSU Metro Center builds on the work already underway, however, the impact doesn’t stop there. SDSU supports workforces across a multitude of industries in Sioux Falls and greater South Dakota, including business, engineering, education, agriculture and more. SDSU is committed to integrating future leaders into these industries by preparing them to lead a life of impact: finding solutions across industries, advancing knowledge and transforming lives throughout the world. Impact starts with SDSU SDSU focuses on building connections first. This starts at the middle and high school levels, providing students with access to postsecondary education regardless of financial situation and offering exploration opportunities to help students envision their future on a college campus.

The development of the SDSU Metro Center is a proud achievement for the university. With this new location, SDSU will continue to foster engagement and transform generations of difference makers into advocates for advancing innovation across the state. Mazing Acres

In 2019, a trip to a Nebraska pumpkin patch sparked the idea to bring a similar experience to Yankton for Mazing Acres owners Molly and Scott Nedved . “We opened in the fall of 2020, and we were hoping to create a place where families and friends could come spend a fall day together, while making the best memories,” said Molly. With over 30 attractions, Molly says they try to add something new every year. The Goat Plex , a playground for the goats, and a themed playhouse area with an old schoolhouse and hardware store, are both new to the 2026 season. The five-acre corn maze, six-acre pumpkin patch, and flower field are accompanied by the popular 150-foot Mega Slide , corn pit, Mega Bounce pillow, and the paintball shooting gallery. Molly says there’s also a plethora of places for photo opps. “We see families from throughout South Dakota, as well as Nebraska and Iowa, and we love hearing that Mazing Acres has become part of their family’s fall tradition,” added Molly. “We want Mazing Acres to be a place where everyone—all ages—can spend a day together.” There are also plenty of interactive games and activities for families to participate in, like the Rolling Races , Tether Ball , Tug of War , Zip Lines , and more. “The best part of the year for us is opening the gates mid-September and finally watching people enjoy everything we’ve spent the year working on,” she said. From planting and caring for pumpkins and corn, maintaining and improving attractions, mowing, painting, building, decorating, and about 100 other things most guests never see, Molly says there’s months of preparation before opening day on September 19. “Once we’re open it takes a lot of people every weekend to keep everything running,” revealed Molly. “We couldn’t do it without our ‘mazing’ staff and the people in our community who help us along the way.” Periodically on the weekends, Mazing Acres hosts live music and face painting, as well as field trips and corporate parties during the week. Molly also heads Mazing Porches —a front porch decorating business that can customize outdoor entryways for autumn. By the time fall rolls around, there are thousands and thousands of pumpkins around the farm. “Our phrase is, “harvest the happy,” and that really sums up what we want Mazing Acres to be,” said Molly. “We hope we have created a place where people can enjoy time together while making the best memories. We hope they leave happier than when they came.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT MAZINGACRES.COM+

Adele's Cat Pumpkin Patch Adele’s Cat Pumpkin Patch in Jefferson originated from siblings having a vision of turning an old farmstead into a local pumpkin patch for the community and surrounding area to enjoy.

“Our goal was to be family friendly at a low cost,” said co-owner Kathy Geary . “A place where you can come relish in the fall weather, let the kids enjoy themselves, and parents can relax as well.” Local lore says the land situated between the Big Sioux River and the Missouri River attracted early settlers in 1859, and what is now Jefferson was originally dubbed “Adele’s Cat.” The story goes that a pioneer family stopped in the area for the night, and the young girl— Adele —lost her cat. After much lamenting over the situation, they decided to stay indefinitely, and named the area after their beloved pet. Named after the popular tale, the attraction at 33031 482nd Avenue brings in people from all over, offering a wide range of family-friendly activities for all ages. The pumpkin patch is open Saturdays 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sundays noon to 6 p.m. through November. “You can visit our farm animals, including goats, chickens, and of course, our friendly cats,” said Kathy. “Kids can ride the barrel train, play in the corn pit, zoom down our many slides, dig in the sand in our tire playground, shoot hoops in our basketball gravity wagon, and try out our slingshots.” Guests can pick their own pumpkins, build a scarecrow, or pump water with old-fashioned pitcher pumps. In true fall tradition, people can also be found exploring the corn maze. Each year the owners host a Pumpkin Drop , where they release one of their giant pumpkins from high in the air. “It’s a crowd favorite for both the young and the young-at-heart,” said Kathy. The event makes new additions to the pumpkin patch every year, usually in the form of a new activity. “This year we added the PVC slide and several pieces of playground equipment out in our shelter belt,” said Kathy. “It’s always exciting to brainstorm what we want to introduce for the following season.” Adele’s Cat Pumpkin Patch is a family affair, with Kathy and her husband Travis , and sister Erin Hammitt and her husband Nick operating it all together. They all handle prep work, starting with planting the pumpkins in the spring. “The guys take charge of building new additions and keeping everything maintained, while my sister and I plan for the next season, create photo opportunities, decorate the porches, and manage field trips and the snack shop,” said Kathy. Food like popcorn and hot dogs are available for purchase, as well as a plethora of beverages like hot chocolate, apple cider floats, specialty drinks, craft and domestic beer, and wine and wine slushies are available. The attraction collaborated with local brewery Jefferson Beer Supply this year, picking and roasting pumpkins in their pumpkin patch this fall to create Adele’s Patch Cat Ale . “It’s a lightly-spiced roasted pumpkin ale that can be found at our pumpkin patch or on tap at Jefferson Beer Supply,” said Kathy. “We love to support each other locally.” The family business also strives to keep costs down so every child has the opportunity to experience the fall fun. “As we continue to grow, our goal is to maintain the charm and warmth of a small family farm,” said Kathy.
