OUTLINE STUDIES IN THE EPISTLES OF JOHN (Continued from page 401) . (Prov. 8:22-31; Isa. 41 :4 ; Micah 6 : 2 ) . -John tells us w hat he knows con cerning the Word, who is 'the Life. (Ch. 4 :1 4 ): “A n d w e h a v e s e e n a n d do t e s t if y th a t th e F a th e r s e n t th e Son to b e th e S a v io u r o f th e w o r ld .” (Luke 1 :2 ; 2 Pet. 1:16-18; Luke 24 :39 ). Notice how John describes his fel lowship w ith th e Lord: “Heard “ seen ;’’——“ looked upon ;”— “h an d led ; ” of th e Word of Life (Luke 2 4 :3 9 ): “B eh o ld m y h a n d s a n d m y fe e t, th a t it is I m y s e lf: h a n d le m e, a n d s e e ; fo r a s p ir it h a th n o t flesh a n d b o n es, a s y e s e e m e h a v e . “A n d w h e n h e h a d th u s sp o k e n , h e s h e w e d th em h is h a n d s a n d h is fe e t.” (John 20 :27 ). He was a real m anH -m anifested by dem onstration to the eyes, the ears, th e hands, th e heart. John had heard Him speak, saw His m iracles, talked w ith Him, leaned on His bosom, loved H im ,SH e , who was th e Word of Life. We cannot define this Life. He said “ I am the Way, the T ru th and the L ife.” (John 1 :4 ; 5 :26 ; 10 :10 ). The purpose for which th is Life was m anifested: T h at we m ight have fel lowship w ith believers, w ith the F ath er, and w ith His Son. Fellowship depends upon knowl edge (1 Tim. 3 :16) : “A n d w ith o u t c o n tr o v e r sy g r e a t is th e m y s te r y o f g o d lin e s s : G od w a s m a n ife s t in th e flesh , ju stifie d in th e S p irit, see n o f a n g e ls , p r e a ch ed u n to th e . G e n tiles, b e lie v e d o n in th e w o r ld , r e c e iv e d up in to g lo r y .” Fellowship depends upon a common range of e x p e rie n c e ,th e re fo re , the necessity of knowing Him. There must be a common life, com mon purpose, common destiny, etc. Jesus became a man, experienced m an’s needs, walked w ith them , w ear ied. w ith them , hungered w ith them, suffered w ith them , was persecuted w ith them. He was touched w ith the feeling of th e ir infirmities. The F ath e r enters into our expe rience— our sorrows— our trials— our tem ptations (1 Pet. 5 :1 ): “T h e e ld e r s w h ic h a r e ■a m o n g y o u I e x h o r t, w h o am a ls o a n eld er, a n d a w it n e s s o f th e s u ife r in g s o f C h rist, a n d a lso a p a r ta k e r o f th e g lo r y th a t s h a ll be r e v e a le d .” - (1 Tim. %:%-). He tells us now- th e first reason for w riting,— “ th a t our joy may be full.” (v. 4). The Gospel of th e Son of God is a Gospel of Joy. (John 15:11; 16: 24; Eph. 3:19; Phil. 4 :4 ; 1 Thess. 5: 16). “R e jo ic e ev erm o r e .” (To be Continued)
