fraternal social organizations while the new Honors Resi- dence Hall offers housing for 360 of NJIT’s honors students and includes computer labs, project studios, a library, lounges and student govern- ment offices. The complex also features dining services, a convenience store and a fit- ness center for the University community. Upon the evaluation of the building site, Hunter Roberts discovered that the project would present unique chal- lenges that required their specialized experience and team of skilled experts. First, the excavation of the Newark site revealed contam- inated soil, but Hunter Rob- erts was able to redesign the foundation to avoid a costly export and infill, which would have affected the project’s schedule and budget. When the location of the power lines created an obstacle for the construction plan, Hunter Roberts collaborated with the power company to relocate the lines. Another obstacle was presented to the Hunter Roberts team when the de- livery of the prefabricated load-bearing exterior panels was delayed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy due to wide load permit restrictions, how- ever, Hunter Roberts was able to over- come this and deliver project completionwithintheplanned schedule of 17 months. The construction team was able to effectively execute the project with expert ingenuity and troubleshooting ability and finished the 214,000 s/f development before students began their fall semester in August 2013. n
