Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

When we hear about and discuss Green Buildings, we typically envision Class A Commercial facilities and upscale residences. There is another sector that truly deserves recognition, that of affordable housing. A forerunner in this category is Habitat for Humanity. I recently attended the dedication and LEED plaque presentation for Harrison Green, a LEED for Homes Platinum project built by Paterson Habitat for Humanity in Paterson, New Jersey’s 4th Ward. Harrison Green comprises five single-family townhouses in the heart of one of Paterson’s most distressed inner city neighborhoods. This amazing housing development exemplifies the best in sustainable building: it was built and equipped with advanced energy saving technologies, and received the highest LEED rating.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chair Ed Seliga Advanced Solar Products, Inc.

FLORENCE BLOCK

VICE Chair Faith Taylor Wyndham Worldwide

LEED-certified homes are built to be energy and water efficient, environmentally sound, and a healthier place to live. Among the high tech features at Harrison Green, each of the five homes is equipped with solar electric and water heating systems as well as additional environmental technologies that assure efficient energy usage and healthy indoor air quality for Habitat homeowners and their families. Habitat homeowners purchase their new homes with the help of reduced home prices and zero-interest Paterson Habitat mortgages. These homeowners are low-income families with solid work and credit histories but not enough income to qualify for a commercial mortgage. In addition, Paterson Habitat is committed to “building quality homes that are designed to be durable and healthy through the use of sustainable methods and materials where possible.” We are so pleased to be honoring Harrison Green for Platinum certification. It is a wonderful achievement that will benefit the residents for many years to come and serves as an example of offering an enhanced quality of life to our citizens who may not typically have easy access to a sustainable home environment.
