Matt Rossi just wants to run faster. The Rockland District High School (RDHS) senior set a new personal best record for himself in the 200-metre at the Eastern Regionals track-and-fieldmeet in Brockville. That was just in one of the preliminary heats for his event. His final run was just a touch slower because of growing fatigue, but it was fast enough to put him into second place at the finish line and earn him a shot at doing even better the end of this week at the Onta- rio Federal of Secondary School Athletic Associations (OFSSAA) at the University of Toronto. «I hope to PB again,» Rossi said. «I’m feeling good that I qualified. I know it’s going to be a big challenge.» Rossi is the athlete from the Prescott-Rus- sell region going to OFSSAA this year. Places in the starting lineups for the provincials are limited to the top four athletes in each category from each qualifying region. RDHS does have one other athlete, Alexa Van Every, who finished fifth in her event, the junior girls’ shot put, at the Eastern Regio- nals. If, for any reason, any one of the four athletes ahead of her is not able to attend OFSSAA, then Van Every will be the first called up as an alternate entry. Meanwhile, as of press time, Rossi is cove- ring his classroomwork and continuing his regular training regimen. He knows how

close he came to almost having the Eastern Regionals title for himself. «It was side-to-side,» he said, recalling the final run in the 200-metre. «He was just a few milliseconds away. I got a good start. After that, and going into the final run, I just gave it all I had, hoping to qualify for OFSSAA. I just pushed as hard as I could». Eastern Regional Results: RDHS Alexa Van Every, junior girls, 5 th , shot put, 10.35 metres Matt Rossi, senior boys, 2 nd , 200-metre, 23.01 seconds; 5 th , 100-metre sprint, 11.32 seconds Gavin Westbrook, junior boys, 9 th , 1500-metre, 4 :29.46 minutes
