The text comes from the famous chap ter of the Bible that records the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai. These commandments are the expression of the character of God and provide the moral and ethical stand ard of God for the people. The six verses which constitute our text state the first commandment of the ten, and have to do with the divine prohibition of idol atry. We must remember that bowing down to gods made with hands, gods of gold and silver or wood, is not the only form of idolatry. Idolatry is contempo raneous with all civilization. It may be defined as the putting of anything or anyone above God as the supreme ob ject of man’s worship and affection. In the light of this definition it may be readily seen that idolatry is the chief sin of today even in “ enlightened” America with our worship of power, pleasure and privilege. There are three things in this passage that deserve our careful study: (1) the reasons why God is to reign supreme in the heart and mind and life of every man; (2) the meaning of the first com mand that God be supreme in every man’s life; and (3) the warning at tached to the command. The Reasons Why Man Is to Have No Other God Than God vv. 1, 2 In the first place because God is God alone. “ I am the Lord thy God . . .” (v. 2). There are multitudes of gods in the religious systems of men; but there is only one true and living God, the
Creator of the heavens and the earth. It is ridiculous to entertain the idea of .more than one Supreme Being. All other aspirants to the throne of the universe are myths and figments of the imagina tion. A study of the universe itself leads the student to the one Eternal Mind who conceived the universe, planned it, and brought it into being. This wonderful Person has revealed Himself to man, not only in the created world, but more especially in the miracle Book, the Bible, and supremely in our Lord Jesus Christ. Again, man is to acknowledge no other God than God because He is the covenant God of His people. “ I am the Lord thy God . . .” (v. 2). Prom eternity God thought about His special people, those whom He planned to redeem and to use as instruments of blessing to the entire world. Because of this He entered into covenant with His people, promis ing them certain blessings through His grace. Every promise God makes He keeps. What a privilege to be numbered among His covenant people! You may belong to this select group by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1 : 12 ). In the third place, God instructs us here that He is the only and the Sov ereign Redeemer, and as such deserves man’s entire devotion. “ I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (v. 2). Just as God brought Israel out of Egypt by Himself and through His mighty power, so He has delivered every believing soul from the bondage of sin. For this reason no child of God ought ever to allow anything or anyone to usurp the place of the Lord God in his life or affections.
y o u o u g h t a r e a d i t ! These sisters will have you in stitches. You’ll find it the most “ un-put-downable” book you’ve read in months. But while it is entertaining and amusing, it also points up some of our careless habits.
