What Lying or Bearing False Witness Indicates Lying indicates an evil heart. The Psalmist mentions “ speaking the truth in his heart” (Psalm 15:2). Because the heart is “ deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9), it is necessary that the heart be transformed. This work is accomplished by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3 :5), who gives a heart of flesh for a heart of stone. This mar velous work of regeneration makes a man a “new creation in Christ Jesus” and is such a wonderful transformation that the lips forget their lying. Lying also indicates a jealous heart. Especially is this true when the lie is derogatory of another. When traced to its root we find envy or jealousy. Lying indicates a cowardly heart. The coward will not face the facts. But a real Christian, an honest man, will “ swear to his own hurt, and changeth not” ; that is, he will admit the truth even though he knows he may suffer as a result (Psalms 15:4). Guarding Against Bearing False Witness Because lying is such a great sin in the sight of God the Christian will strive to speak the truth, all the truth and nothing but the truth. How can this be accomplished? First, by acknowl edging the principle that falsehood is never justifiable. A lie is a lie whenever and wherever it is spoken, and a lie is a direct violation of the command of God. A second way of guarding against bearing false witness is to keep the heart sensitiev to truth and error. Mis- truths constantly countenanced sear the soul and dull the conscience. Nip a lie in the bud and it will never blossom. Face an untruth squarely and back it down. Learn to love the truth. This is what Paul had in mind in Romans 12:9 R.V., “ Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” The context shows that “ evil” in this verse refers to acts of un kindness including the bearing of false witness. Again, the Christian may guard against lying and bearing false witness by making his prayer that of the Psalm ist: “ Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). any work . . .” (Ex. 20:8-10). In studying our topic let us follow three lines of thought: (1) the meaning of this command; (2) the reasons for God’s giving this command; and, (3) the present application of this command. The Meaning of this Command Regarding the Sabbath In the first place, God made the sab bath day a sign between Himself and His people. This we read in Ex. 31:13, “ . . . it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.” At Sinai God fashioned His people into a nation and entered into a covenant with them. He obligated Himself to them and the people obli gated themselves to Him to love Him and obey Him always. As a sign of this contract God gave a special and holy significance to the seventh day, the Sabbath, and indicated to His people that this day was to be observed as a “ sign” or memorial of this relationship. But the sabbath day was not only a symbol for the Hebrew people under the Old Testament system, it was also a blessed foreshadowing of the coming sabbath-rest for God’s people in a sp iri tual sense. That is, the sabbath was a sign of the coming perfect rest ushered in through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. The writer of Hebrews refers to this wonderful truth in Hebrews 4:3, “ For we which have believed [in Jesus Christ as Saviour] do enter into rest . . .” Jesus said, “ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). The Hebrew sabbath day, as a symbol-of the. eternal sabbath brought through Jesus Christ, was done away with at the be ginning of the New Testament dispen sation ,and the Lord’s Day, or Chris tian sabbath, took its place, indicative of the new relationship between God and His people now that sin had been fully dealt with. The Reasons for This Commandment Regarding the Sabbath The sabbath day was designed to pro vide the people with a time specifically set apart for the worship of God. Life is so busy and the human heart so de ceptive that unless a designated time is volitionally set aside the tendency would
