whom the people could consult. At such a time as this the Lord called Samuel to be His prophet (vv. 2-15). Beginning with verse 16 we find Samuel beginning his prophetic ministry. What was the nature of this ministry? It was simply declaring that which the Lord had re vealed to him. A prophet is one who speaks for God. God spoke to Samuel I (v. 10), and then Samuel gave the message he received to Eli (v. 18). Again in verse 21, the Lord appeared to Samuel and in turn Samuel spoke the word to all Israel (4:1a). Memory Verse: “The child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men” (1 Sam. 2:26). Hannah and Elkanah grieved because God had not given to them a son. At last Hannah wept before the Lord and promised Him that if He would answer their prayer and give them a son they would give the child to Him to serve Him all his life. God heard the prayer and gave to them a son whom they named Samuel. As soon as the child was old enough to leave his home, Hannah and Elkanah took him to the temple and left him with Eli, the priest, to learn to do the work in God’s house. Each year Han nah and Elkanah brought a new little coat to Samuel that Hannah had made. The Lord blessed these godly people for their gift to Him by giving to them three sons and two daughters. Eli’s two sons were disobedient to their father and to God. One night God called to Samuel while he slept. Three times Samuel went to Eli, thinking that it was he who had called. The third time Eli told Samuel that God’s voice was calling him and to answer, “ Speak [Lord]; for thy servant heareth.” When Samuel obeyed, God gave to him a message to give to Eli. As, Samuel grew older all of the people knew that God had called him to be a prophet in Israel. God used Samuel to bring His messages to all of the people of Israel. If Samuel had not been faithful in serving in the small ways in God’s house, God could not have trusted him to be faithful in the greater things when he became a man. As. Samuel grew he in creased “ in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.” Because he was obe dient and faithful in the small tasks, God could entrust him with greater tasks constantly. Some Christian boys and girls spend hours of dreaming what they will do for God when they “ grow up.” Now they refuse to obey their parents, they are cranky and unpleasant in their homes, they do their school work poorly, and they refuse to take an active part in any of the work in God’s house. Unless God can trust them to faithfully obey and serve now He will not trust them with a larger work in His service when they are older.
