DECEMBER 5, 1937 UNREACHED MILLIONS IN AMERICA L u k e 19:10; M a t t h e w 14:13-21 Meditation on the Lesson “ For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost”—the plan of salvation in fifteen words! How marvelously concise is God’s Book! In this one verse we find the fact of man’s lost condition, and the method and means of salvation. The Son of man, the Lord Jesus Christ, came into the world for the express purpose of seeking and saving that which was lost —the souls of sinful men. He was the Good Shepherd who sought His lost sheep, and gave His life as a ransom to save them. Horror comes to our hearts as we con template the meaning of the word “ lost.” The wails of a little child who is lost, or the cries of one who has lost his way in a forest, are most pitiable, but more tragic still is the cry of a soul who realizes too late that he is lost, spiritually and eternally. The condition of one who is untouched by the love of a seeking Saviour is the saddest plight conceivable, for his life is counting neither for time nor for eternity—he is totally lost. Who is this seeking Saviour? The “ Son of man” is a title chosen by the blessed Son of God who humbled Himself, and took upon Himself the form of sinful flesh that He might become a Mediator between God and man, thus reconciling the world to God by His death (cf. Phil. 2:5-8; 1 Tim. 2:5; 2 Cor. 5:19). He was the Bread of Life who came to nourish and revive the souls of men who were dead in their sins. At the feeding of the five thousand the Lord Jesus revealed not only His divine power, but also His love and compassion for hungry souls. The disciples were about to send the mob away empty, but their Master rebuked them by saying, “ Give ye them to eat” (Matt. 14:16). He made provision for the great need, and He required that His disciples participate in the distribution of that provision. In this realm of service He has not changed His method; to His chil dren today He has spoken the identical commission. The world is full of men and women who are lost and hungry for the Bread of Life, who are unreached and un touched by the wonderful gospel of recon ciliation. Today we may hear Christ saying as He did two thousand years ago: “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35). Have we considered the crushing need of unreached millions all over the world, in cluding those in America who do not know of a dying Saviour’s love ? It is our business to tell them that “the Son of man is come I to seek and to save that which was lost.”

We are not all called to India, Africa, or China, but you will be living somewhere. Are you witnessing for Christ there? You will be no good in Africa unless you can witness there. We must know that this gospel is the power of God unto salvation, and when we are witnessing with an ex perience behind us, it is not necessary to talk very much. Life lived becomes the greatest witness of all.—P. C. M organ . III. A W ord “ in S eason ” Two atheists on a train were discussing at length and with profane emphasis their disbelief in the facts of heaven and hell and of Christ as mankind’s Saviour. A Christian seated behind them said quietly, “ But suppose it is all true; what then?” The silence that followed revealed the un certainty that must ever haunt infidelity. S elected . IV. O ur M ission A great host of people are helpless, dead in trespasses and sins. Their only hope is that God should intervene. He has. On Calvary’s cross He revealed His love and provided a complete and abundant redemp tion through His own dear Son. Through that cross the prisoner can be set free; the captive can rejoice; sins can be forgiven; the world can be redeemed from the hand of the enemy. But how shall they know except they have a preacher? In the case of Peter, God sent an angel with the news of deliverance. He does not now send an angel; He wants to send you. “Ye are my witnesses.” Are you ready? — T revor M . M orris . V. “ G ive Us . . .” Sudden, before my inward, open vision, Millions of faces crowded up to view; Sad eyes that said, “ For us is no provision ; Give us your Saviour, too.” “ Give us,” they cry, “your cup of consolation; Never to our outstretched hands ’tis passed; W e long for the desire of every nation And, O, we die so fast.” — S elected ,
