ask Him in, and He never refuses a sincere invitation. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of 'God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). The Apostle Paul, in writing to the Christians at Ephesus, says that he prays “that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Eph. 3:17). Faith is the key which unlocks the door to the human heart. When He comes in, there is no room for sin and the vanishing things of the world, because His blood cleanses away all unrighteousness. His abiding presence changes the heart and life which is yielded to Him, for He says: “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23). How blessed to know that the eternal God will take up His abode with sinners so unworthy as we! Yet in loving words of invitation He tells us that He longs for our fellowship. Have we room in our hearts for Jesus Christ, the One who died that He might dwell with us by faith here on earth and throughout the eternal ages? When George V was crowned king, his eldest son went to the old Welsh castle of Carnarvon to be received as Prince of Wales. Accompanied by David Lloyd George, he approached the castle door. All within was still. The door was closed and barred. He knocked, but there was no answer. He knocked the third time, and the bar was drawn, the door was flung wide, and, as he entered, the castle was glorious with light and the hall vocal with song. The Prince had come unto his own, and his own received him with singing welcome. It was not so with the Prince of Peace. “ He came unto his own, and his own re ceived him not.” “ He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not” (John 1:10, 11). —Sunday School Times. II. L atched I nside That wondrous Christ is standing today at some heart-door pleading for an entrance. Is it- yours? You may attend church serv ice and yet He may be still outside. He is if He has not been let inside. The talented Holman Hunt, in his famous picture of Christ knocking at the door, reminds us that the door opens only from within. If you have not opened it, it is shut; and He without, knocking!—S. D. G ordon . III. N o T im e for L if e ? A friend says to me, “ I have not room or time in my life for Christianity. If it were not so full! You don’t, know how hard I work from morning till night. When have I time, where have I room for Christianity in such a life as mine?” It is as if the engine had said it had no room for the steam. It is as if the tree had said it had no room for the sap. DECEMBER 26, 1937 IS THERE ROOM IN MY HEART FOR JESUS? Pathos lingers in the phase, “ no room for them in the inn.” Luke gives us a touching picture of the virgin mother wrapping her first-born Son in swaddling clothes and lay ing Him in a manger, because the inn was already overcrowded. Having journeyed a long, weary way from Nazareth, Mary and Joseph must have been exceedingly fatigued and greatly in need of shelter. W e are constrained to believe with Amos R. Wells that if the bustling innkeeper had only known who his requesting guests were, he would have made room. Although the inn keeper did not know that the King of kings was to born that night, yet we can rejoice that Bethlehem’s manger did cradle a King. We know who He is, and we are without excuse if we refuse Him admittance. Is there room in my heart for Jesus? Voices of many earthly things clamor for room in our hearts: wealth, ambition, pride, show, pleasure, business, and society are each bidding for a place of preeminence. Above their din we hear One saying, “My son, give me thine heart.” The Lord Jesus Christ is waiting for an invitation to come in and abide. He longs to enter the inn of our souls. “The Most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands” (Acts 7:48), but He says, “ I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit” (Isa. 57:15).
