COUNTIES SUPPORT RESOLUTION Champlain Township now has the support of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), in pressing the provincial government to provide funding help for small rural municipa- lities, to cover any extra training costs for their volunteer fire departments. The province is revising its Fire Protection and Prevention Act to include new regulations for mandatory certification and training for firefighters, and commu- nity risk assessments by municipalities. Champlain Township Mayor, Gary Barton, noted that the new regulations could be a financial hardship for rural municipalities. —Gregg Chamberlain
UCPR RESIDENCE TO REMAIN IN HAWKESBURY
The United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) have confirmed last week the new Prescott-Russell Residence will remain in Hawkesbury. The residence, which is operated by the UCPR, will be located on Spence Street, beside the fire hall, up the street from its current location at the corner of Spence and Cartier. Hawkesbury Mayor Jeanne Charlebois has been lobbying to keep the residence in her town, arguing it must remain close to the Hawkesbury General Hospital. The UCPR has been looking at building a new Residence to replace the old one, which no longer meets provincial building code standards for long-term care and seniors’ retirement centres. The UCPR plans to build a new residence that will meet provincial code standards and includes more home units. According to UCPR administrator Sté- phane Parisien, construction of the new
