Movember - Why Men’s Health is Important

Movember is an annual month-long event that gives men the opportunity to grow a mustache, and no one can stop them! Want to cultivate a sophisticated «Imperial»? What about the classic «Horseshoe,» or the police-favorite «Lampshade»? However you decide to style your ‘stache, it’s a great way for men to come together and raise awareness for men’s health. So how does growing a mustache in November help raise awareness? In this article, we will explain how Movember is the perfect opportunity not only to express your personality on your upper lip but also to learn, educate, and donate to help the countless men out there facing silent battles with their health every day. What is Movember?«Embrace yourself!» We’ve all heard that phrase, and many of us have probably said it too. Maybe you said it when your friend was complaining

about pain or discomfort. Perhaps you said it when he was feeling down, didn’t want to go to work, or had been mistreated by his partner. Because men should just tough it out... right? WRONG. Men matter, and too many men believe they should stay silent to protect their masculinity and conform to the strict standards set by society. To end this stigma, Movember was created. There are three main health conditions that Movember aims to raise awareness for, which are often overlooked. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men, affecting the prostate, the gland in the pelvis that is part of the male reproductive system. The initial cause is unknown, and often there are no signs or symptoms for a long time due to its slow development, which means diagnosis

sometimes occurs at later stages. Facts: It is estimated that 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer. Research has shown that black men are at a higher risk, and Asian men are at a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. You are slightly more at risk if your brother or father has been affected by prostate cancer. There are multiple ways to screen for prostate cancer. PSA testing - a blood test - may help detect prostate cancer earlier by measuring the level of prostate-specific antigen. You can also see your GP for a physical examination, an MRI scan, or a biopsy. Treatment for prostate cancer includes surgically removing the prostate and radiotherapy. There is also further treatment for when the cancer has spread

to reduce symptoms and prolong life.
