There have been a number of trips this week, including overseas residential visits. Last weekend, Mrs O’Brien and Miss Lewis took a group of music students from Years 9-12 to Fontainebleau to join a

We were also incredibly proud of Mrs O’Brien who conducted the performance. Today the Music department has hosted a choir from Gothenburg who are joining our students in a performance for Year 6 students. Our Year 10 German students also enjoyed a fantastic trip to Boppard in Germany practising their language skills and experiencing German culture. Throughout the week Year 8 students have had the opportunity to develop their understanding of different cultures as the RE department organised visits to the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon. The students really enjoyed the calm and peaceful atmosphere at the beautiful Thai Temple and meditation gardens. Yesterday, Laura Trott MBE, Minister for Pensions, came into school to talk to a group of Year 12 Economics and Politics students about pension reform. She was incredibly impressed by the students, not only for the thoughtful questions that they posed but also the knowledge and understanding of government policy. She also visited a Year 10 Science lesson and discussed her career with the students. I also appreciated the opportunity to discuss the current challenges in education with the Minister. I would like to wish all our students and their families a wonderful half term break. It is fabulous that for once the weather seems to be on our side for the bank holiday weekend.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As the weather improves and we have more opportunities to get outside, the upcoming half term break gives us an excellent opportunity to spend time on the things that improve our wellbeing. The organisation Action for Happiness has used the latest research into positive psychology to identify 10 keys to happiness. These build on the well-known 5 Ways to Wellbeing, to provide some additional strategies we can use and encourage the young people in our lives to use too. The 10 Keys are: 1. Giving (helping others) 2. Relating (connecting with people) 3. Exercising (taking care of our bodies) 4. Awareness (living life mindfully) 5. Trying out (learning new things) 6. Direction (working towards goals) 7. Resilience (finding ways to bounce back) 8. Emotions (looking for what's good) 9. Acceptance (being comfortable with who we are) 10. Meaning (being part of something bigger) Each key is linked to ideas about how to include that within our busy lives. Additionally, Action for Happiness hosts webinars on wellbeing topics and has an upcoming Digital Mindfulness webinar 7-8pm 8 June for which you can register through the link.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7

It was a pleasure to invite Keira E (7EFR), Charlie M (7EMA), Ella R-J (7SGR), Aaliyah B (7SSA), Sophie L (7PWA), Miriam FLJ (7POR), Anna D (7FCO) and Anna C (7FAD) to a ‘Cookies and Drink’ gathering on Tuesday morning. These students were nominated for their positive and enthusiastic attitude. The Waldegrave canteen cookies are widely recognised as being some of the best on the planet and it was nice to acknowledge the excellent attitude of our students in this way. A photo of myself and the named students is attached here. Tuesday evening saw the Information Evening for parents of next year’s Year 7 cohort. Eden TM (7FCO), Flo V (7FCO), Daisy J (7SSA), Jessica S (7SSA), Leah T(7EMA), Abigail BL (7EMA), Rachel B (7SGR), Flossie H (7PWA), Malaika M (7PWA), Gabby V (7POR) and Yuka H (7POR) acted as Year 7 Ambassadors on the evening and I know that the parents appreciated the warm welcome offered by the ambassadors and the benefits of their Year 7 experience. During Science lessons, Year 7 have been set the task of constructing a ‘nest’ using only paper and tape for their ‘egg’ (water balloon) in order to have a fun Summer challenge that simulates what mechanical engineers do. All classes were enthusiastic and got stuck into this challenge, and in 7SAS Marie, Yasemin, Elizabeth and Elsie managed to drop theirs from a staggering height of 8.2m without their balloon breaking! Well done to everyone for their amazing efforts. 7FAD have accumulated an impressive 158 house points this week with 7PWA (74) and 7POR (42) following in second and third positions for the week. Congratulations to Bea W, Violette M and Hannah A (all 7POR) who raised a whopping £96 for the Lepra charity by holding a cake sale. A huge thank you to all contributors to this worthy cause. The Lepra fundraising continues and students have been issued an envelope for any cash contributions that you might want to make. Should parents wish to donate online, please do so via our JustGiving Page. We will soon be offering parents the opportunity to come into school for a tour led by our Year 7 students. More details will be issued shortly. Please can I remind parents that students are not allowed to wear any makeup. Additionally, I must emphasise that nearly all social media platforms have a minimum age beyond that of Year 7 and so students should not be using sites such as WhatsApp, TikTok etc. I recommend that parents discuss this with their children to help protect them from any cyber issues that invariably arise.
