A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

We have now reached the end of our last week before half term. This week we had Year 8 parents evening. We hope parents and students found this to be informative and students are now aware of the targets that they need to work on to improve before they start Year 9. Last weekend, 10 members of the Waldegrave School Orchestra travelled via Eurostar to Paris and then onto Fontainebleau to join other students from Portugal, France, Italy, Romania, and Germany to form a scratch orchestra. All the towns involved are twinned together and we represented Richmond with an amazing display of resilience, musicianship and collaboration as we tackled some very tricky pieces. Nabucco, Danse Macabre, and the Habanera are just a few of the pieces we performed to a full theatre and standing ovation in Fontainebleau. We even found time for a trip to the Eiffel tower, a stroll around the beautiful Fontainebleau palace gardens and plenty of ice cream and patisseries to keep the sugar levels up during a long 2 days of playing. Congratulations to all involved and a massive thank you to the generosity of the host families who housed the students during their stay. Click here to see some photos from this trip. This week Year 8 had an assembly led by Mr Isted, our Deputy Head. Students were reminded that next year they are going to be the oldest year in KS3 and therefore will need to be setting an example to the younger years, especially the new Year 7 classes that will be coming into the school. Please support the school in maintaining high standards by ensuring your child arrives to school punctually in the correct uniform. This week two students from every form were invited to a ‘cookies and squash’ morning with Mrs Porteous as a reward for their exemplary behaviour throughout the year. Well done to Charmaine F, Olivia W, Ava S, Nashwa Z, Polly B, Isla D, Emeline G, Sehar M, Elina S, Arianna B, Jocelyn M, Romy F, Betty T, Jasmeet S, Pia H and Honor D for being such excellent representatives of the school. All Year 8 classes went on a trip to the Buddhapadipa Temple this week. More information can be found on the next page. Well done to Savannah R in 8FBH for achieving a Distinction in her Trinity Grade 1 exam. Congratulations to our Year 7/8 rounders team who won their match against Twickenham. You all played exceptionally well and should be very proud of yourselves! Well done to 8SPI for being top of the praise leaderboard this week in Year 8. Second is 8PGO and third is 8FBH. Good work! The English Department would like to encourage Year 8 students to read for pleasure. Here’s a reading list you might find useful . I hope that you and your family have a lovely relaxing half term and that Year 8 will come back refreshed and ready to end the year well.
