Flemington Season Finale

UNSUNG HEROES W hile the horses and jockeys are often the headline acts of racing (for good reason), there is also a team of equally important characters working furiously behind the scenes to ensure the success and welfare of every horse. The Racing Industry is a very diverse workplace with a challenging timetable for many. During COVID-19 the dedication of the Trainers and Stablehands has come to the fore. Racing would not have been able to continue without their strict adherence to the bio-security protocols. Chairman Amanda Elliott, said, “We owe so much to these ‘Unsung Heroes’. It needs to be appreciated the people on the ground and the way that they have conducted themselves over these four months is the reason that we are still able to have racing at Flemington. The Board of the Club felt it was important to acknowledge and celebrate the great job that they are doing.” The racing industry is not always an easy one. There are long, unpredictable hours in a high-pressured environment. The trainers live and breathe their job, which is why good staff is handpicked and so valued. Flemington trainer Mike Moroney feels lucky to have “genuine horse lovers” in his staff, people that become attached to the animals and bond with them.
