RACE DAY FEATURE
THE FLEMINGTON CUP 1849 WHEN IS ‘FLEMINGTON’ NOT ‘FLEMINGTON’ ?
BY ANDREW LEMON
I n marking 180 continuous years of racing at Flemington Racecourse since the first meeting here in 1840, the Victoria Racing Club this year has been celebrating some forgotten stories from our past. There is a unique Australian-made, two-handled silver cup in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. It is inscribed as ‘The Flemington Cup’. It stands 17.6 centimetres tall. It was originally presented as the trophy for an 1849 horse race, won by a thoroughbred named Belzoni. It holds special historic significance as the oldest known surviving racing trophy awarded in Victoria. The silversmith was Charles Brentani, a young Italian jeweller who worked in Collins Street, Melbourne from 1845 until just before his death in 1853. The Flemington Cup is the only example of his craftsmanship held by the NGV.

Two riddles surround this trophy, but both can be solved. The inscription clearly reads: “FLEMINGTON CUP. Presented by Mr. James Dunbar and run for on the Melbourne Race Course on the 15th Jan[uary] 1849. Won by Belzoni beating 5 Others. The Property of James E. Crook. Ridden by Mr R Lovelock.” The first riddle is that the race for ‘The Flemington Cup’ of 1849 was not actually run at Flemington Racecourse. The second, related riddle is that the race was not run at ‘the Melbourne Race Course’ – despite the inscription and even though one newspaper at the time says it was. ‘The Melbourne Racecourse’ (usually one word) in the 1840s was the original name of what we now know as Flemington Racecourse. But the ‘Flemington Cup’ of 1849 was actually run on a course 2 kilometres away, on open land adjacent to the newly-built Flemington Inn on Mount Alexander Road, opposite Debney’s Park near the Moonee Ponds Creek bridge. These races were a hotel or publican’s meeting, commonly held in Australia’s pioneering days. A local pub could generate good trade by holding races nearby on a public holiday. Such meetings were held in this era at places such as Brighton on Boxing Day and St Kilda on New Year’s Day. 15 January 1849 was a traditional

Scottish holiday, ‘Auld Hansel’s Monday’ and mine host at the Flemington Inn was a brawny Scot, James Dunbar. Dunbar commissioned the silver cup from Charles Brentani. Its 15 guineas value represented several weeks wages for most labourers. Lesser races on the day had prizes of saddles and riding whips. Notes in today’s race book give more detail about this event, and the ways in which the history of the long-forgotten Flemington Inn is connected to Flemington Racecourse. History, the present and future always come together at Flemington. Today’s meeting celebrates the rising stars, along with the trainers and stable staff who keep the sport powering ahead, especially in difficult times. And the VRC honours the retirement from training of the champion Pat Hyland who first rode as a jockey at Flemington more than sixty years ago. Sixty out of our 180 years equals one third of the total history of Flemington! The ‘Flemington Cup’ of 1849 was actually run on a course 2 kilometres away, on open land adjacent to the newly-built Flemington Inn on Mount Alexander Road
This race is being commemorated today at the suggestion of Deane Lester

THE BELZONI
T he horse who won James Dunbar’s 1849 Flemington Cup trophy was a true thoroughbred. Belzoni’s grandsire, Little John, won the prestigious 1821 King’s Plate at Lewes Racecourse in East Sussex. The pioneering Henty family imported Belzoni’s sire – also named Little John (1831), a grey – to Tasmania, later to Victoria. Belzoni was described as “a neat horse, possessed of every good quality in moderation”. He won several races in the years 1847-49 including a hack race at the annual Melbourne meeting at Flemington in 1848. His owner was James Elijah Crook, licensee of the Wool Pack Inn at Bacchus Marsh, who lived to a great age. Crook was an enormous man, weighing in at around 146 kilograms. Luckily for Belzoni he was not the nominated ‘gentleman rider’ for the 1849 Flemington Cup at the Flemington Inn course. The jockey, Richard Dimmock Lovelock, ran a Melbourne livery stables. Belzoni won the race in two heats on the one afternoon. J.E. Crook’s son James Crooke – he added the “e” to the family name – was only two years old when “The Flemington Cup” was run but as a boy he remembered his father nimbly driving the horse harnessed to a buggy through the gold field diggings at Ballarat. He admired Belzoni as “a bright bay gelding with very muscular loins, standing about 15.1 hands.” “The end of Belzoni was tragic,” Crooke recalled as an old man. “He disappeared one day, and is supposed to have been stolen by bushrangers. My father valued him a good deal, and offered a substantial reward for his recovery. Nothing was heard of Belzoni for a time, but on my father returning to Bacchus Marsh after a trip to Tasmania, he found a letter awaiting him from the Sydney police to the effect that Belzoni had been found abandoned.”

THE MELBOURNE TOWN PLATE
I n the days before the Melbourne Cup (first run at Flemington in 1861), the most important and richest race at the annual Melbourne Races was traditionally the Town Plate. There had been Town Plate races in Sydney and Parramatta since the 1820s and in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) since the 1830s. Any decent sized Australian town had its Town Plate. At Melbourne’s first formally organised race meeting in March 1838 at the so-called Batman’s Hill course, the main race was a Town Plate, at set weights, worth £25 to the winner. The first Melbourne Town Plate to be run at Flemington was at the very first race meeting at the course in March 1840 when Mr Wood’s mare Mountain Maid won the prize in two heats in a field of six. She was, according to the press, “in splendid racing condition and won with ease.” Petrel was the great hero of the Melbourne Town Plates at Flemington from the mid 1840s, first winning the race as a three-year-old in 1845. Petrel continued racing, well, to the age of 14. In that long career he passed through the hands of many different owners. He won the race in 1846 and 1848 when it was extended in distance to three miles. There are mysteries about his pedigree and stories about his past. We know he was “a dark chestnut” under 16 hands in height, “of great substance and length”. Petrel was Melbourne’s first equine idol. The Melbourne Town Plate continued as an important race at Flemington into the 1860s. Archer won the two-mile Plate in 1861 the day after he won the Melbourne Cup and repeated the dose in 1862. But the Cup was by now worth much more than the Town Plate and immediately supplanted it as Melbourne’s – and Australia’s – greatest race.
