Patient Success “There isn’t enough words to truly express my love, respect, and utmost gratitude for the staff at Anchor Physical Therapy! I injured my back in September of 2015. I literally lost count at the number of specialists, doctors, chiropractors and thousands of dollars that I have spent over a year and a half without much progress or healing. I’ve been told by doctors after X-rays and MRI’s that I would probably never be the same again. When I went to Anchor Physical therapy I was very skeptical that they would be able to help me any further. To say that I was discouraged would be an understatement. What has transpired since then I can honestly say and truly believe is nothing short of a miracle! The work that Robin, Mike and Cory Braden and their staff have done was and continues to be BEYOND my greatest expectations. They go above and beyond and make it their mission to properly diagnose you and get you set up for the proper regime and treatment for the right recovery plan. For the first time in a very long time I ammaking progress by leaps and bounds. “The greatest medical care I have ever experienced.”

I no longer have constant pain and am making strides in the right direction for a full recovery. I have full mobility and am getting stronger every day. On top of that, and most importantly, you are not treated like just a patient. They treat you like a friend. They take you under their wing and give you care as if you were a part of their family. I am and will always be in their debt for the care they have provided to me. Hands down the greatest medical care I have ever experienced. I have no doubt that I will have a full recovery and the name Anchor Physical Therapy will be the first recommendation that I make to anyone that has any type of physical injury. Thank you to everyone at Anchor Physical Therapy. You all aren’t just another doctor’s office. You all are an answered prayer!” - B. MacHamer

“I Am Not Going To Allow Sciatic Pain To Control My Life!” Discussing Sciatica & Back Pain

Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock

by a muscle called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. WHY DOES SCIATICA OCCUR? If there are changes in posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It even reaches down to the foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is often characterized by one or more of the following symptoms: • Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg (rarely in both legs) • Pain that is worse when sitting • Leg pain that is often described as burning, tingling, or searing (versus a dull ache) • Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes • A sharp pain that may make it difficult to stand up or walk • Pain that radiates down the leg and possibly into the foot and toes (it rarely occurs only in the foot) Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and irritating to constant and incapacitating. Symptoms are usually based on the location of the pinched nerve. While symptoms can be painful and potentially debilitating, it is rare that permanent sciatic nerve damage (tissue damage) will result, and spinal cord involvement is possible but rare.

“Get Outside and Exercise” Sunny Says! Here are guidelines to get you going:

Relieve Pain In Minutes Try this movement if you are experiencing Sciatica pain.

Good For Sciatica Pain

HAMSTRING STRETCH While lying on your back, raise up your leg and hold the back of your knee until a stretch is felt.

Exercise early. People can always find more excuses to avoid exercising outdoors at the end of the day. In the morning your energy is higher, the air is generally cleaner, the temperature is lower, and you will feel better all day long. Avoid temperature extremes. Although your body can adapt to colder or warmer weather, you should avoid exercising outside in extreme heat or cold. Don’t get burned. Although some sun is good for you, too much sun is not. Always protect yourself with a good sunscreen, and wear sunglasses and a hat with a brim. Drink enough water. If you drink about 8 to 10 ounces of water 30 minutes before doing outdoor exercises, it should hydrate you sufficiently for a 30-minute workout. Make outdoor exercises part of your lifestyle. As you become more physically fit, your mind also becomes more aware. You start to look at life differently. It can be a life-changing experience.
