Board of Trustees Agenda 2020

Central Washington University Board of Trustees February 21, 2020 ACTION – Bachelor of Science Entrepreneurship

In June 2017, the CWU Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship received a $460,000 grant from the Herbert B. Jones Foundation to support the development and staffing of a new entrepreneurship major. Washington state, CWU’s primary market, has seven university-level entrepreneurship education programs. All existing programs are focused primarily on models of commercializing research to leverage the intellectual property creation of university students and faculty. The central corridor of Washington, while possessing a significant population and economic capacity, lacks a substantial outlet for individuals seeking entrepreneurship education. The central location of CWU Ellensburg is a positional advantage, in that the program can fill this educational vacuum, and also attract students from the other universities who are not satisfied with offerings closer to home. This program prepares students for institutional/organizational entrepreneurship by advancing their ability to create value through developing expertise in a knowledge domain, propagating their sense of agency, and providing them with the knowledge, skill-sets, and experience in creating value. The program starts by encouraging students to concurrently pursue a second major, while introducing them to basic business, personal, and interpersonal skills. A progression of courses culminates in a senior-year mentorship program with industry professionals who work with the students to develop a career track. We recommend the following motion: The Board of Trustees of Central Washington University endorses the recommendation of the Faculty Senate (Motion No. 19-32) and hereby approves the Bachelor of Science Entrepreneurship degree program this day February 21, 2020.
