PASTORAL CARE Jacobs House

Elia Garrett, along with the leadership of Deputy Head Prefect Louis Gunn. Sport In early February, cyclist Jack Drage came 3rd overall in the Round The Bays race and 1st in the U19 grade. In the Canterbury Road Cycling U19 Championships at the beginning of March, he placed 1st in the road race and 3rd in the time trial. Jack also rode in the tour of Southland and put in some very good performances throughout, including three top 20 finishes across the seven stages. He has also signed on with the AC Bisontine club in the top national division of amateur clubs in France. Thomas Audeau represented Canterbury in the U17 cycling team at the Vantage Age Group Track National Cycling Championships in Invercargill. Thomas performed at his best and it is a great achievement to be part of the team, considering he is young and eligible for a grade for a couple more years. Alex Hickman competed at the National Surf Life Saving Championships and placed 5th overall in the U19 grade in the surf ski competition. INTERHOUSE EVENTS Athletics Athletics Day is always a big event early on in the College calendar and this year was no exception. We had a pretty good number of boys working hard and participating to the best of their abilities across a range of events during physical education lessons and lunchtimes in the lead up to the finals. For many, their performance in the heats was enough to get them into a final and the House was

well represented by these boys. We had 19 boys qualify for at least one championship final and some of them qualified for a number of finals. Well done to athletes Isaac Aitken, Jordan Braithwaite, George Cochrane, Josh Durant, Angus Gifford, Louis Gunn, Gray Heath, Alexander Law, Caden Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Frank Li, Finn McCormack-Young, Ollie Nicholson, Hamish Patterson, George Ryan, Thomas Stephens, Jackson Thomas, Angus Thorne and Sean Rutherford- Bradford for their efforts. Three boys won titles, with Louis Gunn taking the senior boys 800m, Thomas Stephens the intermediate javelin, and Angus Thorne the intermediate 100m. In the overall individual championship cups, Angus Thorne came 2nd and Thomas Stephens 9th in the intermediate grade, and Louis Gunn was 7th in the senior boys grade. Swimming We had a number of boys involved in relays and individual events throughout. Jacobs House placed 7th overall, and in the individual competition Josh Durant was 10th overall in the U14 grade and 2nd in the 50m breaststroke, while Isaac Aitken was 5th overall in the senior grade, with a number of top eight placings across six events. The junior House tens relay was also 2nd in their event.

We started, as always, with a very busy first term, welcoming 13 new entrants into Jacobs House at Year 9. They soon settled into the speed of life at College and it was wonderful to see them engage so positively in those early days with each other and all the activities that came their way. Covid-19 was certainly something no one would have expected to impact us the way it did, but I am proud of the way the boys handled themselves during remote learning and how they persevered through the challenges. We returned after remote learning and, although we had to manage restrictions and changes to our normal routine and way of life, the boys continued to achieve well. At the end of the year we farewelled our Year 13 students, who have led the House well under the guidance of Head of House Josh Johnston and his deputy

House Music For the first time since the

earthquakes House Music was held at the Christchurch Town Hall. It was amazing to be back there. Jacobs House gave a rousing performance of their chosen song “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts. They sung well and sounded great!
